>I still think One Man Two Guvnors should of petitioned Best musical since it would have likely won, and it is more of a musical, in that its music actually propels the plot, than Once is and is better written than NEWSIES and ONCE combined. 1m2g would of likely won best musical, Cordon's performance still would have one, and best book would have been a shoe in.<

My question with the Matilda girls is this. (I am seeing the show this weekend, but, as always, I am curious to see what the board thinks).
The Boys from Billy Elliot were sharing the role due to the physical demand it required, the dancing, movement, etc. Not to mention the emotional depth and acting chops needed. I personally thought they were wonderful, but deserved a special award. Does the role of Matilda offer any of the same challenges?

Posted: 3/13/13 at 12:32pmI want to join the chorus of people who hope A CHRISTMAS STORY isn't forgotten. I'm not ashamed to say I thought it was actually a better-written show than MATILDA. It'd be nice to see it nominated.

Still holding out hope for Jessie Mueller to sneak in for Best Featured Actress.
Best Musical will probably go to Matilda, much as I'm not a fan I do think it's more exciting than most of the other contenders, though I have yet to see Kinky Boots.

I simply cannot imagine a repeat of the BILLY situation. I think the role of Matilda should have had one alternate, and a stand-by, just in case. It's in no way a harder sing than ANNIE. It's not particularly physically demanding. Hell, I think Mary Lennox is more challenging. Plus, with Osnes and Miller, there is real and very strong competition. I sat in wonder of the Billy I saw. I thought the Matilda was adorable. That's the real difference.
Carvel should be put in supporting, cause his role is absolutely a supporting role...which should leave Best Actor as a race between Porter (who I thought was wonderful) and McClure (who I didn't see).

Posted: 3/13/13 at 2:29pmRobbie, I completely agree w your assessment of the role of Matilda, and of the placement of Carvel. I hope they do it this way. I have yet to see Porter but McClure most certainly deserves to be recognized with at least a nomination. He was wonderful.

I'm hoping for a Mueller nom as well, but expect it'll go to Rivera and that'll leave her and Wolfe out...even though I wasnt that thrilled with Rivera's Puffer. Supporting Actress is getting crowded.

Doodle, you're probably right. Rivera being in featured easily makes her the most likely of the Drood ladies for a nomination, but no harm in us rooting for the dark horse, right? :)
I love Ashford but I think it's fairly likely she won't make the cut. Martin, Settle, and Margherita are the closest to locks in my mind.

Posted: 3/13/13 at 3:16pmAbsolutely, Mueller deserves it over Rivera in my book. Settle could lose out if Hands closes to bad reviews...even if she gets raves.

I agree with you, Mueller's performance was just more surprising and nuanced to me, but Rivera has an undeniable star quality. Good point regarding Settle, waiting to see the reviews for Matilda stateside before deciding if I think the Tonys will go for both Ward and Margherita. I thought they were both great, but if I had to choose, I'd give the edge to Margherita.
Also I want to amend my comment about Rivera being the most likely of the Drood women to be nominated, I meant that purely in featured, I do think Stephanie J. Block will snag herself a nod, and a well-deserved one.

I happen to think Matilda is a much trickier role than Annie. Long stretches of intellectual storytelling, more difficult songs, and it's played by a girl much younger than Annie. It's the youngest leading role ever to play Broadway.
It matters not, I thought Bailey Ryon was much more captivating than Lilla Crawford and gave a much more cohesive performance at her first preview than Katie Finneran after Annie was frozen.
Based on performance, Mueller should absolutely be in the mix. She was phenomenal in Drood.

I mean, I think it's pretty clear where I stand on Drood nominations, but I'm really curious who everyone thinks has a realistic chance, especially regarding the men. I think Jim Norton really deserves to be recognized, his role is thankless in a lot of ways and I'm not sure it will be appreciated how much he carried the show on his back. A monumental task, I should think
. Not sure if Will Chase will be recognized but I also thought he was phenomenal, and I wasn't a particular fan of his going in.
I've said it before but I'd also want and hope for Stephanie J. Block and Jessie Mueller to be recognized.
Re: the Matilda vs. Annie comparison, I understand what HeyMrMusic is saying about the role, but to me it isn't so significantly tougher that it requires 4 girls rotating in it when Annie is only played by one (given, she has understudies and they have gone on more than a handful of times). That's just my personal opinion though.

There should and will be a lot of Tony love for the Drood cast. Jim Norton seems pretty likely (remember that George Rose won for the same role in the original), especially since the leading male category seems a little light this year. Same goes for featured male and Will Chase. Rivera will probably get the featured female slot, yet I think Mueller and Wolf still have a chance. Maybe they'll give Rivera a special award like they did with Peters last year. I think Block might have the hardest time since her part really isn't leading and the slots might already be full (Matildas, Crawford, Osnes, Miller, Carmello).
This season has been disappointing. Matilda, Pippin, and Drood will probably get the majority of the nominations (at least 10 each)

I can't really see Carolee Carmello getting nominated- yes, she's wonderful, but her show was a dud and won't be remember otherwise. I think Leading Actress will easily be Miller, Osnes, Block, Crawford and the Matilda girls.
And though I haven't seen the Broadway incarnation of Matilda, I feel like Lauren Ward would be nominated before Lesli Margherita. I'm sure they're both wonderful, but Miss Honey is a much meatier role than Mrs. Wormwood, who really only gets to show off in "Loud."
Anyway, as to the topic of the thread, Matilda will easily win, as has been said. And I think the other nominees will be Kinky Boots, Hands on a Hardbody, but I can't think what will get the fourth slot.

Posted: 3/13/13 at 8:57pmI think 'Drood' will be nominated for lots of Tonys, as the 25 people who make up the Tony committee are absolutely distinguished, when it come to matters of best performance or best performers they will do the right thing and nominate what they think are the best of in each category, the problems lies when the ballots get sent out to the general Tony voters they don't seem to be the most honorable and scrupulous patrons of theater, with plenty of self interests conflicting a long the way.

Just give the Tony to Patina Miller! C'mon...she dances (difficult Fosse choreo), sings, swivels her hips, does some trapeze moves, uses a whip, all while looking great in skin tight spandex. No more Matilda controversy. Problem solved.
I also hope Drood gets lots of Tony love. As well as McClure.

Posted: 3/14/13 at 12:37amMore than Mueller, Block, and Rivera, I would like to see Jim Norton get nominated. He was such a highlight of DROOD for me. I highly doubt it'll happen, but I thought he gave such a wonderfully charismatic and breezy performance.

Does Jim Norton really seem like such a long shot? He was absolutely wonderful in a role that has already won a Tony. If they decide to keep Carvel in supporting (which they should), I could see the Tony race coming down to Norton and Porter, with McClure as a spoiler (mostly cause the show flopped...otherwise, he'd probably be the favorite).
I've yet to see Pippin, but friends have, and all seem to think Miller will walk away with the Tony. Would she be the first person to win a Tony for a role that previously won a Tony for a man?

I hope Stephanie J. Block gets nominated. She has not had the most luck when it comes to starting out in roles (The Pirate Queen, 9 to 5) so this success would be good.
Any shot at Hunter Foster nominated for Best Actor?
