re: Casting for the Little Mermad

Kerry Butler is about two years younger then Alice Ripley. Why don't they just bring back Jodi Benson if they are going to cast someone that old.

With all due respect, she's not. And I'm not advocating Kerry for the role, but if Daphne RV played a 19 year old without people up in arms...

I know they're different roles. It's fun to play the casting game - I'm sure Disney will do just fine.

I'm speaking figuratively. I realize Kerry Butler isn't forty, but I do think she shaves off a bit on her age. But I don't begrudge her that. It worked for everyone else.

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

Is anyone else bugged that "mermaid" is still spelled wrong in the thread title?

I've said it once in the other post, and I'll say it here:
Bette for URSULA!!!!!

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

I love Kerry Butler SOOO much...but the little mermaid is one of my favorite things ever, and after hearing her do the songs from the show, I say NOOOOOO!!! she does this really ugly forced nasal thing with every song, she's TRYING to sound like a Disney character, when she doesn't need to. If she lost her "character voice" that I know she is putting on, and sang true she would sound beautiful....but...the way she sang it on the demo--NO EFFING WAY.

I should be Ariel..I was born to play that fricking role...LOL...just because I have like..NO experience..that's fine! AHAH
and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

I would love to see brooke tansley as ariel!! She needs to create a role and the Disney shows seem right for her! (although I'm a little biased since i went to high school with brooke) She's come a long way with singing, dancing, and acting - she'd be lovely!

Still hoping the strong rumors regarding Celia playing Ariel are true.

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

Just to "clear the air" - no one is rumored to play anything at this stage. There have been a few workshops, and I would imagine that there will still be a few more.

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

I think wayne brady as sebastian would be a lot of fun.

Not to typecast her as the new "disney gal" or anything, but Ashley Brown seems to be the hottest new thang out there - I think she'd sound beautiful - her as Ariel possibly? Or too early for her to be creating huge roles like that? With B&B under her belt, I wonder...

I myself would prefer Celia though - I am in love with her voice. It's someone with a similar vocal quality to mine that gives me hope that there's room in professional theatre for the clear, not massive belty, mixer types - huzzah!

and I hope my darling Matthew Morrison or even Cheyenne (c'mon, he's got the look down perfectly!) are in consideration at some stage for Prince Eric.

I'd also like to see Emily Skinner as Ursula cause I just love her - no matter what people say about her demeanor or whatevs (and who knows if any of that is even true) I think she's amazing and underrated. I think possibly Mary Testa could do that as well - anyone with thoughts on this?

I could see Laura Bell Bundy as more the "when Ursula's pretty" character cause she has the edginess to her - not to typecast her as a bitch but she's so good at the 'may seem beautiful and innocent but you can tell she's a tough cookie underneath it and a force to be reckoned with' kinda thing...

I'm rambling.

I shall cease and desist.
If I show you the darkness I hold inside, will you bring me to light?

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

Hey Laura Bell Bundy as Vanessa is a great idea! For Ariel I'm thinking Leigh Ann Larkin who was a swing and an understudy for Ashley Brown in On the Record. For Ursula I'm thinking either Lauren Lane or Katilin Hopkins (because Katilin's rendition of Poor Unfortunate Souls was hilairaous). For Prince Eric I'm now going with Cheayenne Jackson cause he has the look and the voice. Tom Wopat for King Triton and Andy Karl and Tyler Maynard as Flotsam and Jetsam

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

Kerry Butler as Ariel makes me cry. I LOVE Kerry Butler, but I have an incredibly difficult time seeing her as Ariel.

It's too bad that the girl who did Ariel's voice in the cartoon would be too old now. I liked her voice in the very bad recording of SMILE that I have. lol I'd love to see her on stage.

And here I was dreaming that I'd win my tony playing Ariel.

Ohwell. I wasn't fast enough. hahah maybe I'll just have to wait for Pocahontas. lol

Eden Espinosa. Apparently, she was a smashing success when she worked the show at Disneyland, and I just love that girl. She totally floored me in Brooklyn, despite the show itself.

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

If only some of you could have heard Kerry sing Part of Your World at Alan Menken's concert.
Well, I'm glad he got away with it.

Bebe...you still can! they added that new tony award...just do the role before they close! :) unless I get to it first re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

Up in Lost---I didn't hear that, BUUT I've heard the entire demo, as well as heard her sing Part of your world live on Seth's show..and she's horrible for the part..LOVE HER to death, but not for this role.

Yes, I agree, Brooke Tansley would be an awesome choice.

What about John O'Hurley as King Triton? I'm still a little unsure about that but I think he might be great.

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

I'd like to see Jenna Leigh Green as Vanessa.

re: Casting for the Little Mermaid

i dunno if anybody's said this but i totally see sarah ramirez as ursula, i think she'd be HILLARIOUS.

ariel? do an open call. the reason a 19 year old would be the best idea is because ariel is tecnically supposed to be 15-16, (i can't remember the hans christian andersen tale, she may be younger there), and if you get a 20soemthing year old who looks 19, chances are she doesnt look 15-16 at all.

im sure there are people who can pull it off tho.
