That people were capable of misreading literature decades ago doesn't make their interpretations any more valid. He isn't "fixed" on Gatsby. He's often rather repelled by him, but Gatsby is a mystery to him, as he is to us, which is why he continues to associate with him, which is why readers keep reading until they've finished the book. Jordon is a dislikable person, and Nick is telling us the story after the fact. That's why he uses the tone in describing their relationship that he does."
These discussions don’t seek to rewrite the original text but just provide a different lens through which to view it and spark deeper thinking. But I guess if you think it’s a misread than it should all stop! joevitus hath spoken.

ah. This will be the woke production that older audiences might have issues with
"
Yeah, mass numbers of ticketbuyers have had so many problems with those flop shows with "woke" subplots like Come From Away, The Producers, Juliet, Kinky Boots, Mormon, Billy Elliot, Spring Awakening, and Color Purple.
Get a grip.
That character has always had a great deal of gay subtext depending on how you read it,so it's hardly a revolutionary idea in this production. By that same metric, it's not really a surprise that the Korean-money-backed production doesn't have overt homosexuality."
The novel is probably more "woke" than people remember. Tom is explicitly depicted as having white supremacist views, for instance.

Is this likely to extend past July 21? Debating whether I should make a trip to Boston just for this or whether I can plan to see it the first week of August when I already have a Boston trip planned.

Truman Capote Wrote a screenplay in the 70s where Nick and Jordan were both gay and serving as each other's beards. Obviously no studio at the time would touch it.
The upcoming world premiere musical Gatsby has extended its run at Massachusetts' American Repertory Theater. Performances are set to begin May 23, and will now continue through August 3. Opening night is June 5. The production was previously set to play through July 21.
All eyes will be on Rachel Chavkin's Gatsby next month as her Lempicka is a flop and will close up shop in a couple and we shall see how The Great Gatsby is reviewed on Thursday and on Tuesday with Tony noms?

I agree with the idea that it's most likely about preventing audio bootlegs, and the immediate social media music clip posts that go with them. Stopping video recording and phones ringing are just side benefits.
I've been to two shows where Yondr pouches were used. Both plays and both contained nudity in the show. Is it possible there's nudity in this show? I doubt they would go through all that trouble to stop people from recording the show.
“Your Performance of Gatsby Will Be an Invited Dress Rehearsal
We need a bit more time to achieve all of the technical complexities of this large-scale production. Your preview performance of Gatsby on Thursday, May 23 at 7:30PM at the Loeb Drama Center will now be an invited dress rehearsal featuring a welcome from Tony Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin. This will be the first time the production is performed from start to finish with all of the technical elements, so it is possible, though unlikely, pauses may happen. We apologize for this unexpected change and we hope you will be excited to join us for this behind-the-scenes experience of a world-premiere musical.”
Edit to add: They’re offering refunds whether or not you attend, or you can opt in to donating the price of the ticket. Interesting to see them offering so much for what they plan to be a complete presentation of the show
It's nice that they sent out that warning. I think we've all been to a lot of first previews with a final dress vibe.
I don't mind the use of Yondr pouches, whether it's to minimize audio bootlegs or because of nudity or something else. Audio bootlegs can be an increasingly big problem for a work in development and there's no other way to keep that under control.

I'm hearing she-Chavkin just may have another mess to deal with so soon after the Lempicka fiasco. Anyone going Thursday or later this week to report back?

Sunday in the Park with George
I'll be there Thursday and, out of respect to the production, will probably post my thoughts on Friday once it officially has a preview under its belt. Plus it will give me a chance to collect my thoughts. Immensely looking forward to this and wishing it the best! I'm so intrigued to see a different and more deconstructed look to Gatsby, considering the art deco, roaring twenties parties of it all.
I'll be there on Sunday....but I'm sure there will be many there (from here) before then!

“The Invited Dress Rehearsal of Gatsby Has Been Cancelled
Due to inoperable air conditioning at the Loeb Drama Center during the current heatwave, and to ensure the health and safety of our artists, audiences, and staff, we are unable to rehearse and therefore must cancel the invited dress rehearsal of Gatsby on Thursday, May 23 at 7:30PM. We are heartbroken, and we understand and share in your disappointment.
If you would still like to see the show, we will do our best to exchange your tickets into another performance. There is limited seating available in the rest of the run. We recommend choosing a performance during July 3 - August 3 to accommodate your exchange, including a newly added performance on July 7 at 7:30PM. We cannot accommodate exchanges into performances May 24 - June 5. Exchange fees and any difference in cost between performances will be waived.”
Ouch, wondering if this is the only show that will actually be affected!

I hear Chavkin was spotted backstage with HVAC pieces
And..... Friday has been cancelled, Sat is now the "invited dress" .
Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I'm begining to doubt my tix for Sunday.

You’re hearing this for a show that has never performed in front of an audience? You’re a mind reader?
