Chris Evans is in talks to step into the shoes of legendary actor Gene Kelly in a developing film project produced by John Logan, Variety has confirmed.
According to a source close to the project, the untitled film is based on Evans’ original idea in which a 12-year-old boy who works on the MGM Lot in the 1950s finds an imaginary friend in Kelly while working on his newest film.
Though a studio is not yet attached to the project, Evans is set to produce the film alongside Logan, who is also writing the script. Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street Productions will serve as producers, as will Mark Kassen. Evans, Johnson and Bergman last worked together on 2019 box office darling “Knives Out,” the sequel to which is in post-production. Three-time Oscar nominee Logan’s oeuvre includes penning Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator,” Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator,” Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd” and James Bond movie “Skyfall.”

Well, I hope they don't sugarcoat what a total cruel jerk Gene Kelly could be.
Sounds like he was one of those men who had power and a temper and made life hell for people.

I wonder if they’ll have a double do his dancing? It would be difficult to do a film about a Kelly and not have dancing in it.
Well, seeing how Kelly is only imaginary in a 12 year olds mind, I doubt he'll be a jerk.....as to the dancing.....??
With Chris Evans in talks to play Gene Kelly, and Tom Holland in talks to play Fred Astaire in a different film, we're reaching an interesting stage in how well these MCU stars can bring audiences to play song and dance men.

There are some clips of Evans dancing on YouTube. He does a dance off of different styles with Elizabeth Olsen on the Ellen show, and in another clip of Ellen, he does a little tapping. He grew up doing musical theatre and his mother was Artistic Director of a children’s theatre company. It’s clear he can move and has had some classes. Does that mean he can dance like Gene Kelly, no. But if he trains, he can do well enough to pass with creative camera angles and maybe a double a la Natalie Portman in Black Swan as needed.
Just watched those clips on YouTube. There is zero evidence on these clips of his dancing skills. He’s basically half-assing trendy dances like any person can do. Even anyone without any rhythm. Even the one where he half-ass tap dances for a few seconds, I can fake it 150% better.

Oh, you can fake it better? I take it that means you haven’t had any dance training?

I doubt Michelle Williams can dance like Gwen Verdon, but she portrayed her memorably. Ditto Sam Rockwell and Bob Fosse.
I'm intrigued.

Ha! Yup. Thank you, I will correct.
Michelle Phillips as Gwen Verdon? I don't think so.
In this NYT article, he does talk about tap dancing and how he did take lessons during the run of Lobby Hero so maybe he can fake it enough before a double takes over.
