Wow, did not realize she was that old. What a legend. And she was still working! She will be genuinely missed.
I have loved her in so many roles over the years, but I will always remember FRAU BLUCHER (*neighs*), and her genius delivery of one of the funniest lines in cinema: "He was my boyfriend!"

She was also a Nellie Forbush understudy in the original Broadway run of SOUTH PACIFIC. She played the role for almost a month in October 1952.
Here she is with George Britton, the replacement Emile.

Sad news indeed. The original MTM Trifecta are all now gone: Mary, Rhoda and Phyllis. May she RIP.

I adored her in Show Boat. Her big moment at the end of the act was legendary. A true master of her craft.

I've always loved her, and seeing "Frau Blucher" in Show Boat was such a thrill.

^(I know this thread is about a serious topic - but I feel like this is what this comedy legend would have wanted)

Have you seen the movie? If not, you don't understand.

Have I seen Young Frankenstein and understand her name is synonymous with glue with freaks out the horses? Sure do. But, to get them to violently react that way, they clearly were abusing them. Just like in Blazing Saddles where everybody was just okay when he punched a horse?
I'm so glad that's no longer a reality on film sets and they have professionals there to make sure none of that happens again.

Didn't know that that those horses were abused. Sad to hear.

Oh, my. You ARE aware that trained stunt horses were used on the film BLAZING SADDLES? That horse did many tricks including falling down on command. He was never injured. Animal supervisor Ralph Helfer was on set at all times. Gentle Jungle was the name of the horse and had extensive film and TV credits as a stunt horse. Today it is required to have the “no animals were harmed” disclaimer at the end of the film but though this disclaimer wasn’t credited on older films does not mean animal supervisors weren’t on set.

Heartbroken to hear this. One of the greats. I will be viewing some of her work this weekend in her memory.

Such very sad news, indeed. One of my favorites - best MTM episode ever was when Lars cheated on her with Sue Ann. Her reaction to tasting her own apple pie was priceless ! Too bad she hadn't returned to B'way in recent seasons. She would have made a great Madam Arnfeldt in 'A Little Night Music'.

Thanks for one of the dumbest posts ever. You seriously think that they punched a horse??

Thank You for the information.
Speaking of the classic 'Blazing Saddles', I recently read a brief interview with Mel Brooks who says he's been working on the Broadway musical of his film during the pandemic. Let's hope it does as well as 'The Producers'.
