No More Tears: Cry-Baby to Close on Broadway June 2
by Adam Hetrick
Cry-Baby, the second Broadway musical based on a John Waters film, will play its final performance at the Marquis Theatre June 22, according to box-office personnel.
Directed by Mark Brokaw, Cry-Baby arrived on Broadway following an out-of-town engagement at the La Jolla Playhouse this past fall. A 2008 Tony nominee for Best Musical, Cry-Baby began Broadway previews March 15 and officially opened April 24.
An official closing announcement is expected shortly.

I hope all parts of the company find work soon
I'll second that. Some mighty talented folks in a not so stellar show. Flops and hits both require the same amount of energy to create, and these guys (and dolls) were certainly giving it their all.
Good riddance. Looks like no cast recording...

I agree. Great cast in a not so great show. I wish them well, and look forward to seeing them all again soon.
"Looks like no cast recording..."
I thought they recorded. Guess I was wrong..? Or were there plans to?

Just got my ticket for June 22nd on tdf...my fourth and final time. Seeing Spencer Liff TWICE that evening...at the last performance of CRY-BABY and at Broadway Bares!
Poor Alli Mauzey. She is so brilliant. Maybe she'll take over as full time Glinda after Kendra now? One can hope. She was so excellent as the standby.
Maybe now THE VISIT will have a house to play in.

Wow, I can't say I'm surprised but I'm pretty sad about it. I wish they would have at least made a recording, but that's life. Good luck to all involved in the future.
THE VISIT should go into the BOOTH...I think the MARQUIS would be too big for that show. Seeing it at Signature was perfection...such a small intimate house.
White Christmas has the theatre booked for the fall, WSS for February.

"A national tour is expected to begin in fall 2009."
Why? Do the producers have any indication that a tour would sell well?
Sad to hear this, as I'm one of the few that didn't absolutely hate this show the way others seem to.

"Why? Do the producers have any indication that a tour would sell well?"
Due to the proliferation of a "Broadway Series" in nearly every market, they have guranteed ticket sales. With that in mind, if they re-use the broadway sets, the start-up costs will be minimal, and they have a locked-in audience.
So please help me here.
The producers were holding out until the Tonys and anticipating a boost in ticket sales after the show. And since that didn't happen (or was modest) they decided to close. Is this the likely scenario?
I enjoyed Cry-Baby. Very talented cast and the best choreography I've seen in a long time. Sad it is closing so soon. I'm thrilled I got to see it.

Oh wow. I didn't know it was that bad.
Wow...
If Godspell is still
coming perhaps the
Marquis will house that

It wasn't a great, probably not even a good show. But the dancing was fantastic and I hope every one of those dancers goes on to bigger and better things. I'm sure Spencer Liff has attracted a lot of notice and it will be interesting to see what happens with him.
I was surprised it lasted this long. It wasn't a terrible show (it wasn't great either. It was just... meh.) but when I saw it the Mezz was practically empty.
Talented ensemble though, I wish them the best.
