I think getting an Emmy for performing a song you perform 8 times a week on Broadway on a daytime TV show is completely bizarre, but congrats to her.
Who knows? Her Harriet Tubman movie could be the Oscar contender she needs.
Whoopi Goldberg's? EGOT is always debated. She got the Tony for producing Millie & her Emmy is for Hollywood Squares.
Same for Erivo, getting an Emmy for a 4 minute appearance on a talk show? I don't know.
This board's obsession with EGOTs is bizarre.
Just one measly little Oscar?

Well, Margo Martindale won an Emmy for guest actress for 48 seconds, 4 minutes is much more lol

Good for her. She's a great performer with a great work ethic. It's nice to see that kind of artistry awarded.

I believe for The Americans where she won two best Guest Actress Emmys.
Tony, Grammy & Emmy within ONE YEAR? That's insane.
Also Whoopi now has another Daytime Emmy for hosting The View.

And it wasn't even a "thing" until 30 Rock.

It would be if they all weren't for the same thing.

Imagine getting annoyed by the "EGOT stuff"
I'm an EGOT away from an EGOT.

I've known about the EGOT for at least 30 years, mainly as a bit of trivia. Back then, only 3 had achieved it, and, as a kid, I always knew that Rita Moreno was one of them. Of course, with the addition of awards categories, it's easier to get, but that doesn't make it any less impressive. In any event, it was definitely a "thing" before 30 ROCK.
Everyone knows it's the PEGOT that matters.
I actually remember the REAL originating article. The reporter mentioned that Phillip Michael Thomas had EGOT tattooed on him. He explained the meaning and how it was his goal.

But I think that is the very point some are trying to make - it does make it a bit less impressive if it doesn't seem to be as competitive. I find it a bit odd that someone can apparently have TV's highest honours for singing a song, and of course the Grammy for cast albums is not as competitive as say the major categories. On the other hand, as perhaps the most prestigious award available in entertainment to get an Oscar will almost always seem like a massive accomplishment.
I am happy for Cynthia, but I can't help but raise a slight eye brow.
My point is that, with only 12 EGOT winners, it's still an exclusive "club." Loophole or not, they're not handing them out like candy, and it's hardly Cynthia's fault that she was able to parlay her Tony-winning performance into a Grammy and an Emmy. I consider it a testament to how special it was.
Erivo wining an Emmy for this performance is no less ridiculous than Audra McDonald receiving an Emmy for introducing Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - In Concert with the New York Philharmonic.

Bear in mind that this Emmy category has only been around for a few years, so with the addition of silly categories like this EGOTs may become a lot more common. I have no issue with principal vocalists on cast recordings winning Grammys (especially when they're as essential as Cynthia) and of course think she is well deserving of her Tony but no I'm not going to be impressed that she's won an Emmy for basically nothing.
Additionally, whilst the performance was lovely, it's no better than any of the 'Best of Broadway' performances that have been featured on the Today Show this week (well maybe except the Groundhog Day one). Do all of those performers deserve Emmys now too?
I'm still a little confused how it counts as an Emmy for her when the nomination was submitted like this:
Outstanding On-Camera Musical Performance in a Daytime Program
Cynthia Erivo and the Cast of The Color Purple
Today Show (NBC)
But hey, however that works, good for her.
I do think my one issue is that she's won three major awards for one role. We all know she's brilliant, but it's the stage performance on TV and on the album. I just wish they could have spread the wealth throughout her career, not that she's actually got a foothold in the States.

Didn't she also play the beggar woman?
