This started previews on 10/30.  Any word?  I am a bit confused by looking at Show Score which lists 87% based on 22 positive ratings but there are only three actual reviews listed.

On most review sites including this one, most people just click on a rating without bothering to write a review. That said, I'd be interested to know thoughts on it as well. I already have a ticket cause I would pay to see Aubrey Plaza read the phone book for 2 hours. But still curious.

I’m still processing. It’s definitely something new for Aubrey Plaza. The show is sexy and scary and both actors get to try thick Bronx accents, with varying levels of success. There is a HUGE explosion of emotions on stage. Lots of yelling, particularly in the first scene. Frankly it borders melodramatic from Christopher, while Plaza doesn’t quite seem to let us in enough at the soft points to make her louds feel authentic. The text is so emotionally broad. It’s a hard piece. I’m just not sure how successful this production is at finding authenticity of sweetness within the bitterness. This is only their fifth performance so I hope they find their balance.

Did you see shades of Ronny and Loretta from Moonstruck?  My tix are for December so by then I am thinking they’ll be in a groove.

Oh, I didn’t actually put together that he wrote Moonstruck. Makes me understand it a little more. Still think it needs some more warming up.

Vulture published a new behind-the-scenes article about the production. Evidently Plaza is staying the Patti LuPone on the UWS while working on the show, and those were my favorite parts.

Saw this last night.

Thin plot, decent performances, glad I only paid $59

This was like watching any toxic relationship everyone had in their 20s. The book doesn't exist, the accents are rough and it just didn't work at all. And the YELLING. Christopher has much more stage experience and has done similar work, so he's much more comfortable in the role but you can't do much with such flawed material.

Great theater and a very cool crowd tho.

I saw it this week and it's still haunting me.  I don't understand the negative reactions here... I wasn't familiar with the play, so perhaps that made a difference.  Now that I've researched the history of other productions, I'm even more impressed.  First-time director Jeff Ward has a big future and I look forward to his directing career.

The addition of a pas de deux as a transition from the bar to her bedroom was thrilling.  Like a less-violet Apache Dance, it perfectly expressed their coming together (no pun intended) and set up the next scene.  Ending with the BANG of her Murphy bed slamming to the floor, it was a stunning bit of theatrical magic.

Scott Pask's set design was gorgeous, especially a 3-mirror vanity in her bedroom that often reflected the actors so you got different perspectives of them.

Loved the performances as well, and I would definitely see this again if I could.

I have a single ticket for Tuesday Nov 14, 7:30pm that I cannot use. I’d like to get what I paid for it if possible, $107

DM if interested, thanks.

Saw this tonight. If they filmed a class in the basement of some acting studio in 1982 where the teacher told 2 first year students who'd never been in a relationship and know nothing about life, to improv a toxic relationship between two broken people who meet at a bar one night, I imagine this is what they would have come up with.

I’ve been a fan of Aubrey Plaza ever since seeing her in “Safety not Guaranteed” about a decade ago.  I haven’t seen any of her later films.  I’ve mainly kept up with her through guest appearances on YouTube.  The early one’s are gold.  The later one’s ones seem more of a schtickt.  I was shocked to find out she is 39 and married.  Damn Covid made us all jump in time.  Don’t get me wrong she is gorgeous and still in her -ahem- prime.  But I would have liked to see what the 31 year old pre celebrity AP would have done with this role.

Christopher Abbott I knew nothing about.  From the name I expected white bread.  He’s anything but.  With a tuft of kinky black hair, an indeterminate ethnicity, not to mention his physique, he’s perfect for this role.  Maybe they could remount this with another actress like they did “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”.  But it’s the AP brand that sells out every show.

As for the play, it’s a staple of acting classes and should probably stay there.

That being said, I’d love to see Aubrey in something a little more appropriate.  I think she’s got a future in this business.
