UGH! I know there is never a guarantee there wont be an understudy at a performance but I called telecharge before I bought Wednesday's tickets to triple check Ben was in. I hope he is ok, but what a bummer!

So your theory is, what, that he pulled a "dick move" because you think he just decided, during his last week in a show he's been pouring his heart into for two years, that he wanted an afternoon off? That he's been faking medical issues? Or that the "dick move" was trying to do eight shows this week, and that he shouldn't have wanted to perform all eight shows before leaving?

Well let us all know how the telecharge call goes and if they are aware that it actually changed...

Yeah, I'm not sure this is a "dick move" by anyone. I would 100% guarantee that Ben does not WANT to be out when he was scheduled to be in. His work ethic and dedication to this role has been well documented, so I'm sure he pushed it until the last minute to see if he could do all 8 shows the final week. While the last-minute announcement is of course disappointing for ticket-holders (I've dealt with this disappointment in the past too), I'm sure it's because they know as soon as they announce Ben is out everyone will call to get refunds, so then if he was in fact able to perform after all they'd have a lot of even angrier people who gave up their tickets! It sucks to be so wrapped up in one performer, and it can be really really disappointing, but unfortunately that's part of live theater.

So, maybe you could just explain what you meant if you feel I've misunderstood you. It sounds now like you're saying that when he went to the team and said that he and his doctors thought he could do these 8 shows, they should have turned him down. But I'm now honestly not sure what you meant, so I'd be happy to have you clarify.

I'm so sorry to have been the bearer of the bad news about Ben being out for Wednesday's matinee. When I noticed the note on Telecharge, I even briefly considered not posting. But I thought the people who already had tickets would want to consider getting refunds in advance, rather than traveling to the theater and finding out last minute (or even worse, after they were already in their seats). Plus anyone who was planning to sleep out overnight in the cold, or pay inflated StubHub prices. So again, sorry for anyone's day I ruined Dear Evan Hansen - Cancellation Line/Lottery/Ticketing Questions .

Does anyone have a ticket they are willing to sell for any other show I am very open to Venmo/swapping tickets for the Wednesday matinee.

My apologies. I honestly didn't mean it to come out that way. I'm pretty sensitive about this particular issue, but I shouldn't have let myself get worked up over a conversation with a stranger on the internet.

On a happier note, if anyone is interested, there's a single $450 premium ticket, 2nd row center orchestra, available for Friday night. (It only comes up if you select the "choose seats for me" option).

So, this I'm actually pretty qualified to comment on, because I've had chronic laryngitis due to overuse of my voice, and I made the doctors explain it to me in detail before I would agree to their treatment plan, which included a lot of mandated vocal rest. Basically, when you have the kind of vocal overuse injury that I had (and that I believe, based on information provided publicly, that Ben has had) the effects are cumulative, but the recovery can be too.

When I first got sick, it was after working for more than two years in a job where I spend pretty much my entire day talking, including having gotten into the bad habit of spending several hours a day yelling into my speakerphone because I was too lazy to wear a headset. I started getting really hoarse at the end of the day, and having a chronic sore throat, and at one point I caught a bad cold and lost my voice entirely for more than a week. I had to go on total vocal rest for almost a month. Then my voice came back and I was okay for a little while, but there was a period of time where any time I didn't take perfect care of myself or the air was too dry or I caught any small illness, I'd lose my voice for anywhere from a day to a week. But eventually, I did heal. And the way the doctors explained it to me, it was because I took the rest I needed that I'm now less susceptible to losing my voice in the first place, and when I do, it's more likely to be for a day or two, rather than for weeks. And my doctors have told me now that I can resume a pretty normal level of activity, including periods of stress and above-average vocal use, with minimal risk to my health.

Ben seems to have had similar issues. He did this role at Arena Stage and Second Stage with pretty much zero unscheduled absences. When he first started having medical issues, it was just for a day or two, and then he was put on a couple of longer periods of medical leave or vocal rest, and he tweaked his routine, and eventually they settled on the solution of reducing the number of shows he does so that he would have more rest built into his routine (which was exactly the advice I was given). And so it doesn't strike me as crazy that his doctors would have said, just this once, for one week, we'll give you the go-ahead to do 8 shows like you used to, as long as you promise that this will be the end of this crazy schedule and you'll take a real break afterwards. Professional athletes also often get the same kind of permission from their doctors: ok, you can play in the Superbowl injured, as long as you promise to tap out as soon as it hurts, and to go into intensive PT after it's over. But it also wouldn't surprise me if, after pushing himself through the weekend, he or the doctors realized that, in fact, he hasn't recovered as much stamina as they'd anticipated, and he does need a full 24 hours to recover after tonight's performance, especially if he's still hoping to do 4 shows in 48 hours this coming weekend. That's just the way these things work sometimes, unfortunately.

And if my totally speculative guess about why he's out Wednesday afternoon is correct, I'd also guess that as heartbroken as the fans who had tickets then are, he's also devastated to be missing this show, and also to find out that he's not as healed as he hoped he was.

Hi folks! I'm newbie here.. But I'm planning to spend Christmas in NYC and definitely wanna check out DEH. Given that it's almost sold out on Telecharge and inflated prices on Stubhub, what would be the best option to get tickets. Shall I follow the 4 day rule and wait until 4 days before the show to the box office? Would the odd be bigger or even smaller around the holiday season (i.e. Dec 21/22)? Or if anyone has a spare ticket of that time, welcome to PM me!

Thanks for possible advices in advance :)

Hi everyone!! This may be an odd request (or maybe not, lol) but I'm wondering if anyone who is seeing the show before Ben leaves could snag me a Playbill?! Sometimes people will leave them on the floor after the show. I'm an NYU student so I can meet you at the theater after the show any day of the week! If anyone would be willing to do this, shoot me a PM!! I would be so grateful and could grab you a Starbucks or Schmackary's or something of the like. Please let me know and good luck to everyone trying for tickets :)

I have about 10 extra playbills I picked up off the seats or the floor the last time I was there. Happy to give one to anyone who wants one, if you can meet me in NY or Venmo me a dollar or two for mailing costs. Message me if you want one.

Know this is a really long shot, but at least need to try. I’m still kicking myself that the one night l didn’t spend solving the puzzles of the universe (jk, the captchas) they released the partial view tickets for Sunday. It looks like one or two even made it to StubHub which is really sad. Anyway, if anyone (even last minute) can’t use one of them, let me know! Would be eternally grateful.
