Yes, but winning a Tony also comes with higher paychecks, especially for the role they won a Tony for :p

I'm still thrilled to get another recording of the score to hear. It's a shame they don't seem to record two times in the same language anymore.

I wonder if past rumors of other shows going to the West End (but never actually materialized) were plans of getting the shows filmed for release.

I doubt it, but it is a lot cheaper to film there.

The cast filmed: Ainsley Melham (Aladdin), Trevor Dion Nicholas (Genie), Isabelle McCalla (Jasmine), Jonathan Freeman (Jafar), Don Daryll Rivera (Iago), Irvine Iqbal (Sultan), Brian Gonzales (Babkak), and Brandon O'Neill (Kassim).

Yes but does anyone today really care about her (mostly) flop film career or television appearances? I could be wrong but I get a sense Bernadette's market today is primarily theatre fans (and she is usually marketed and described mostly for her theatre performances, maybe adding in the Jerk or Pennies From Heaven). And my claim is that the Sunday & (especially) Into the Woods filmings have kept this alive. But I could be wrong of course.

Its interesting they went with McCalla over Courtney Reed, considering she not only originated the role on Broadway, but also closed the show in the West End. I remember seeing/listening to a West End live video earlier this summer with autoplay on, when I was like wait I know that voice. So i look and I think I know that face, and had to check the website to see it was actually Courtney Reed.
Honestly the only thing can think of as to reasoning is that she might not look like shes in her early 20s on film anymore, which isn’t an issue on stage with all the make up and costumes, but when filming close ups it might be more present. Its sad to think about, and hope someone on this board can state otherwise.

I had the same thought. I’m wondering if it’s a compensation thing? For the record, McCalla never posted anything on social media about even traveling to London, when most of the performers in the filming did post. Must’ve been a nice cushion have closed Prom that week.

Looks like this was supposed to come out the time Hamilton did, but once Disney got the rights to Hamilton they pushed it aside. The article says it should be out by the end of the year. Crossing my fingers!

This is probably the only musical every member of my family has seen except for me. My wife and younger daughter saw it on tour in San Francisco. My older daughter saw it on Broadway. All enjoyed it. I would certainly give it a watch, especially since I already have Disney+.

There was nothing flop about her TV appearances, love. To be a fan, you're just too involved with her Broadway gigs to truly appreciate her career.

I’ve gone back and watched most of her film and TV appearances. Of course I enjoy them all as a Bernadette fan and love that her career is so diverse but even I am not so self-deceived to think that the quality of material, production, prestige and her performances centre around anything but her Broadway musical career. When advertising for Hello, Dolly the marketers rightly used her Broadway career to sell tickets. She is a “Broadway Baby”.

I don't think with a show like this the OBC is really all that necessary.  

The original Aladdin I thought was very good, but not necessarily the performance of the decade.  Kind of a role that anyone with a good voice and acting skills can handle.  

I thought Inglehart was very good too, but again, not exactly necessary for the filming.  Interestingly having seen the theme park production in Southern California years ago, that Genie was great too.  Which just goes to show how much talent there is out there.  Even though the Disneyland version was the Readers Digest version of the Broadway production, he resonated with me as much as Inglehart in many ways.  

That being said, those two were definitely the strong point, along with Jafar.  The original Jasmine, not so much.  She was by far the weak link.

I saw the Broadway production in spring 2017 and I thought it was okay. It had its moments but overall felt too long. Courtney Reed must have been having an off night when I saw it because her singing was not good.

We must have been there the same night.  Just not good.  My friend even commented on it coming out of the New Amsterdam. Told her I was thinking the same thing.  Acting wasn't particularly good, and voice not really what I would expect from a Broadway Jasmine.

Does that happen a lot, actors renegotiating their salaries after a Tony win? I’ve never heard of that.

An actor with a good agent will have a clause for a salary bump for award nominations and wins.

Funny you say that... I hate to harp on a performer because I know there could be many reasons that someone's voice might be drained or tired, perhaps she was sick for a couple weeks or something weird like that (I am quite hesitant to just blatantly call her bad) but I also went Spring of 2017 (with a school group for that matter) and her lackluster performance especially during A Whole New World seemed to be quite the talking point amongst our group. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Reed on film as I'd actually love another chance to see her performance, almost to prove it wasn't some sort of weird string of flukes or something... it does make me glad McCalla was chosen. I loved her in The Prom, so I'm looking forward to seeing this whenever it does come out.

Even if they didn't had the clause for the same production, if they left and were to come back, then it's a new contract and they can get negotiate whatever they want.
