I'm originally from Denver, and DCA hasn't had this good of a line up in many, many years. Why did I have to move away, WHY!
hehe- For once I am excited to be living half a country away from NYC
I am interested to see how they stage this :)
Hell-to-the-yes!
Ah, this makes me feel better! I was so sad to read Bebe was coming back to Chicago, because I just moved from NYC to Colorado... This is a nice treat!
5 Disney shows on Broadway?????
Tsypin is doing the sets???
Isnt he a bit... uhm... hardcore intellectual for this? I mean, the man is an amazing designer, but his style is very high concept... not to mention outrageously expensive to build.
Good lord, what an odd choice.
If you think about it, most of the Disney shows are high concept and outrageously expensive to build.
Sean,
But if you think about it, he is actually a better choice than he may first appear to be. As stated in the article, it is undeniable that his sets have an almost infinite scope and seem to be a never-ending world that extends well past the stage in all directions. Also, lately he has been utilizing a lot of glass, and other transparent materials, sculptural elements in his sets, which would be perfect for an underwater world. Also, he uses a lot of mechanized elements, which a budget like Disney can afford and likes to utilize for the wow factor. A lot of thie creative team stems from the opera world, so this could be a very interesting project

ps...I was just at your website yesterday trying to figure out if you have posted and recent set designs
I'm so excited for this. There's bound to be some great special effects...
and OMGZZ IDina shuld totally play ARIEL!!!!1111
*cough* ... kidding, of course.
yes, Sara NEEDS to be Ursula
Sara NEEDS to show up.
Dont misunderstand; I love Tsypin's work. His book The Black Box Factory is one of the best out there as a published portfolio. Yes, he has a very different sense of space, which could play well. But he's also a very heavy designer: lightness of touch is not his forte, as he will be the first to admit. I think that;s why he surprises me as a choice for this -- it would be like asking Zefferelli to design The Fantasticks.
This should be fascinating.
No, I havent updated the site in a while. The DON GIOVANNI is probably the most recent thing up there, and that was designed last spring. We're now in the completion stage of it for an October opening at Taconic. And I'm wrapping up an early-60s take on SCAPINO (both sets and costumes this time around) that's been a blast to research: everything has this Jacques Demy feel about it. But because it's part of a competition in November, I cant put it on the site just yet.
But thanks for letting me know you were there. That means a lot.
I am a huge Tsypin fan right now. And yes that book is amazing...too bad it is 100 dollars...

I'm so over movie-to-stage adaptations, but this is really exciting! My favorite Disney movie ever (and that's saying a lot).
I'm sorry to bore everyone with even more casting speculations, but wouldn't it be just TOO fabulous if Jennifer Holliday played Ursula? Seriously, (and I'm not trying to be rude) in pictures and videos I've seen of her she really does remind me of Ursula.
And I've said it before, but Katherine McPhee for Ariel! I dunno why that seems like such a good idea to me.
>> too bad it is 100 dollars...
Check Amazon. They had it in the mid-40s.
Ursula has already been cast. That character is going to be a puppet and the voice of her will be the same person who did it in the film.
Pat Carroll? Isn't she almost 80 years old?

Yawn....another Disney theme park/cruise show that will probably be cast with game show contestants. So much for new musicals.
I tottaly want Sara Ramierez as Ursala. It would be too good to be true.
Oh gawd, and the 4000 "who is going to play ________" threads have arisen once again...
Wow, Sara would make the BEST Ursula!
Not that Disney would *ever* condescend to do it, but we all know who would make the unquestioably perfect Ursula.....
Harvey Fierstein.
Looks like I'll be in Denver in 07....
why not CHicago????...that would make my life much easier.
is it slated to be on broadway about fall 2007 then if doing previews in Denver 1st? also, would anyone have an idea which theatre it would likely go too?
i'd be willing to speculate that it'd go into the Palace if it comes in Fall of 07. that'll give Legally Blonde time enough to close
