Dont misunderstand; I love Tsypin's work. His book
The Black Box Factory is one of the best out there as a published portfolio. Yes, he has a very different sense of space, which could play well. But he's also a very
heavy designer: lightness of touch is not his forte, as he will be the first to admit. I think that;s why he surprises me as a choice for this -- it would be like asking Zefferelli to design
The Fantasticks.
This should be fascinating.
No, I havent updated the site in a while. The DON GIOVANNI is probably the most recent thing up there, and that was designed last spring. We're now in the completion stage of it for an October opening at Taconic. And I'm wrapping up an early-60s take on SCAPINO (both sets and costumes this time around) that's been a blast to research: everything has this Jacques Demy feel about it. But because it's part of a competition in November, I cant put it on the site just yet.
But thanks for letting me know you were there. That means a lot.
