“And for those wondering, they sold out of everything he signed within 30 minutes. I walked overthere maybe 40 minutes after his tweet, and they said everything was sold out. I hope he goes again because it clearly made an impact."
How selfish of him. Why did he only sign everything with his name on it? Why stop there? Have him sign every item in the store. We all know in his moment that would bring the value up 1000%.
”Where’d you get that LMM signed copy of Flowers for Algernon?
This was a very lovely gesture on LMM’s part, and I truly mean that. But I do hope that’s not the extent of his devotion to saving the shop. I hope he — and really the entire NY theatre community — continues to rally around them in the coming months.

So upset to hear this. What else has closed recently on the block? I'm assuming Midtown Comics is still there -- asking for a brother and nephew.
In fact, that makes me wonder if the Drama Book Shop could move from a storefront to a less-costly second-floor location on the same block or at least nearby?
WOW....now THATS putting your money where your mouth is. Store will still close on the 20th, and not re-open until the fall - no location yet announced.
I'm coming into the city this weekend - partly to visit here before it disappeared. So, it will be goodbye for now. Fall has never looked further away!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
This is great! I'd imagine LMM is in Puerto Rico and won't be at the bookstore's closing.
Anyway, this bookshop is the only bookshop I know of that is selling the play script of THE INHERITANCE (play is running in London's West End at the moment) so if any of you want to get a copy of the play and read it, try to get it before the bookshop closes on Jan 20th.
With a smart producer/businessman (Jeffrey Seller) overseeing the day-to-day operations, I wonder how the "new" Bookshop will evolve? The final paragraph makes me think that maybe it would also include a coffee shop, a place to buy merch, or other resources to draw crowds and make money:
"Mr. Seller’s office, which is already running a “Hamilton” merchandise store in Midtown, will oversee the day-to-day management. He said the book shop would have a revamped website and expanded programming; the goal, he said, would be to break even, which in recent years the store has done occasionally but not consistently."
This street has changed over the last two years. The empty lot that was next to the Drama Book Club is now a new hotel. The fabric store next to Lot Less is now closed. Two of the fast food places are also now shuttered. The porn shop remains!
It took 25 years, but the money from Times Square has finally reached 40th street. It started about a year ago. I used to work there and just as my office moved, it started to change. Now entire strips have been closed and renovated, replaced with Pret's and Chipotle's. There's a new hotel. It all happened really fast.
The porn shop remains.I feel like landlords keep the porn shops around to be like "This area isn't so sterilized. Look! We have a porn shop!"

I can't recall exactly what WAS there before as the only three things I have been to on the block are this, midtown comics, and Lot Less, but I do know that the closed stores are on the side of the book store that heads towards Port Authority, not the half of the block that runs towards Broadway so stores like Midtown are unaffected. YET at least. Lot Less is actually like the middle point of that block so really everything from Midtown to Lot is business as usual so far but then Lot Less to the end is drastically being altered.
This was such a great story to wake up to. The existing owners must be so happy--plus they get to stay on as consultants which is great for continuity. I'd love to see them compete a little more with Playbill Store and carry some more merch from current and past shows. I know there are other small shops in the area that do this as well.
Hoping there will be some top of occasional if not permanent philanthropic component as well.
