I wonder if Eddie Redmayne and Alfred Molina being nominated against each other made any difference with the Drama Desks.
It may have. John Gallagher, Jr. went on to win the Tony after losing the Lead Actor race at the Drama Desks, where he was nominated alongside Jonathan Groff.

^ Not sure, but I feel like Redmayne has lost most of his buzz.
He wasn't nominated for the OCC. He lost the Drama Desk (though was in leading). Brantley predicts Stephen McKinley Henderson will win the Tony, while Isherwood predicts Jon Michael Hill.

This possible Montego Glover upset is shaping up to be exciting.
IF Catherine Zeta-Jones loses...and I say IF...she can squarely lay the blame for her loss at the feet of one of Britain's finest directors, whose wrongheaded mise en scene caused Zeta-Jones, Angela Lansbury, Leigh Ann Larkin and Erin Davie each to fundamentally misinterpret her role.

I am sure it was just me but...Zeta-Jones waving the used tissue seemed to be a nod to Tony voters saying "I really had a cold"!
But I have to say, I really didn't like her when I first saw her in "The Haunting". That was my first exposure to her. I watched the special feature that she was featured in and I just didn't like her attitude. Then somewhere along the line I really started to like her. So even not having seen her performance, I am glad she won just because I like her!
Henderson and Redmayne are definitely both helped by the fact that they're in hit plays that are still running. Redmayne has the advantage of a very large and flashy role, but Henderson is a respected veteran finally getting some Tony recognition. And then there's Jon Michael Hill who's show closed almost 5 months ago, but he was universally praised even by those who didn't like the play itself. He could pull out a Julie White/Michele Pawk-style win.

Exactly what part about a "possible Montego Glover upset" is exciting? Worst call of the decade if that happens. Her performance isn't even nomination worthy in my eyes.
I can still see Red sweeping at the Tonys, potentially winning Play, Director, Actor, Featured Actor, and a design award here or there.

Exactly. It would be frightening. Look at the last 3 winners: Christine Ebersole, Patti LuPone, and Alice Ripley. Glover's performance is completely amateurish compared to them. Would be a shame to go from those ladies to her.

Of the other four nominees, Catherine was my least favorite, but at this point, I'm praying that she wins just so Montego doesn't ruin everything. In fact, if you'd ask me right now, I'd be ecstatic about Zeta-Jones winning.

Kate Baldwin gave the best performance in that category, but that doesn't matter to voters.
I'm in Zeta-Jones' corner at this point. I'd love for Sherie Rene to get it, but her buzz is non-existent. Glover is a great singer in a horribly written role.

Except she oversells her one solo song in the show. She sounds much better on the ditties that don't forward the plot. O and it's not just a horribly written role; it's just plain horribly written.
I hope Fela! poses some threat at the Tonys. It wasn't around for these precursors... I hope it at least wins for Orchestrations over those thin, sometimes ugly-sounding orchestrations of Memphis.
I'm happy Sondheim on Sondheim won over Million Dollar Quartet. That should have been the case when Tony nominations came around. I find it interesting that half of the acting categories went to performances in closed shows. Now I'm sorry I missed out on Brighton Beach Memoirs.

I have not seen Eeryday Rapture yet, but of the four remaining Tony nominees for Actress in a Musical, I can very clearly and easily rank them from best to worst:
1-Christiane Noll (very nice...)
2-CZJ (she was fine)
3-Kate Baldwin (ditto except her role was so easy imho)
4-Montego Glover (didn't like)
I agree with the poster who said they were never hoping CZJ would win, but now would be exstatic if she does because it would mean Glover doesn't. My sentiments exactly.
This awards season is really making me think I need to go see Memphis again. It was so meh. I don't remember anything about it except I liked the last song, wanted to punch Chad Kimball in the face, felt like I was watching weaker versions of Hairspray and Dreamgirls, and the choreography was good-ish. Thats it. If that wins, it will be sad. Sad, I tell you. Of course, I didn't really love Fela either, so I don't know what I want anymore...I guess an American Idiot upset...of course I havent even seen that yet...
ARGH!
Ljay, I'd put money on Denzel winning the Tony. If he had been nominated for the Drama Desk, I really think he would have won.
I am disappointed...How did Memphis win? And how did Montego Glover win?

MrMusic, I rarely agree with you, but in this case, you're 100% accurate. In a real season, Glover would not even be nominated. I've seen better "acting" in community theatre.
MEMPHIS will win the Tony for no other reason than it's the only musical nominated with an original score. It's a simple as that.

AC, that's what upset me in 2006 when Jersey Boys won. It didn't have an entirely original score. I really wanted Drowsy or The Color Purple to win.
Everyone keeps referring to Sherie Rene Scott as if it would be a nice thing IF she won these awads, but it won't happen. I guess I just don't understand why? I live in a world, an idealistic world I guess, where the Broadway Diva with the stand out, rave review, performance of the season wins the Tony.
And what are these comments about her having "no buzz?" I guess I'm just a little curious as to what qualifies as "buzz?"
I really am starting to wonder if I missed something with Memphis...so many people, including awards voters, apparently love it.
And Montego Glover's acting is community theater level at best, it astounds me that she was even nominated for the Tony, much less now has buzz to win the award. Not even close to being on the same level as the other women nominated, imo.
There's not a lot of buzz on Sherie Scott, Kaybee, because frankly a lot of people in the industry can't stand the production. I personally liked it a lot, but have to concede Sherie Scott exudes a certain type of personality that people respond to or they don't. Talented as she is, she's not exactly the warmest most gregarious stage presence, and I've talked to a lot of industry types who found her phony and emotionally detached in her own life story. Glover's innate likeability on stage is her biggest asset.

Of the Leading Actress nominees, I saw CZJ, Noll, and Baldwin. All of them were wonderful and absolutely Tony-worthy, but I think CZJ deserves it by a hair.
