Fall 2024 Shows

Yes, I know we're barely into spring, but I am planning a trip for December and am interested in any rumors....specifically musicals.

Crazy For You - Is it coming in?
Mamma Mia! - Hearing af a 25th anniversary Broadway return. Anyone?

I know Tammy Fay, Sunset Blvd., and A Wonderful World are official.

What has anyone else heard?

Fall 2024 Shows

In the "Happy Feet" thread there is a post with a list from a recent Broadway Across America survey of shows in development. It gives you an idea of the things various producers are throwing out there. Some might never see the light of day.

But we are too early yet to know what will still be in theatres come December, or what limited things might pop up. Also it probably won't be until mid-May that the non-profit Off-Broadway houses like the Public & the Atlantic start announcing shows for next season. There are usually at least one or two musicals there, that may extend through the holidays if they arouse enough interest.

Also, Roundabout has announced they're doing David Henry Hwang's "Yellow Face" on Broadway in the Fall, starring Daniel Dae Kim. Followed by "English" in the winter, and "Pirates of Penzance" in the Spring. I'd guess they're excluded from EDSOSLO858's thread because they only include shows with official dates?

There seems to be a lot of talk about both Death Becomes Her and Buena Vista Social Club coming in within the next year, but not sure what timing on that would be (or how close it is to being a done deal).

Fall 2024 Shows

Beyond what has been confirmed for Broadway houses so far, I've heard the following for the 2024-25 season recently (but don't take my word for any of this). Remember, things can change on a dime in this industry, some shows can come out of left field, and there is massive turnover all the time:

  • Death Becomes Her — Lunt-Fontanne in the fall (barring terrible reviews in CHI)
  • Swept Away — eyeing Circle in the Square for the fall
  • Buena Vista Social Club — potentially Broadhurst
  • Romeo and Juliet — Hudson
  • Booth supposedly has three upcoming tenants: Oh, Mary! in the summer, have heard rumors of Left on Tenth in the fall, then Next to Normal spring 2025
  • Florence Gatsby is waiting for the St. James to be available (pushed back to 25-26?); Sunset likely closes at the end of Nicole's contract
  • Stranger Things Part One — Majestic, following renovation
  • Gypsy — either Shubert or Imperial, spring 2025; Othello takes the other (though these plans may change if/when the Broadway becomes available in January)
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray — currently hearing Golden or Jones, spring 2025

I don't know where Redwood and Queen of Versailles are going to land just yet, and Streetcar is being loosely linked to the Lyceum.

And IMO — Betty Boop would be a wonderful fit at the Marquis next spring!

The other Gatsby really should wait a little bit. Even if it is better than the current one, the average theatergoer (not like people on this board) is not going to know the difference or they'll conflate the two and that might doom it before it even starts. A few years in between, at minimum, would be ideal.

I've heard rumors about Motive & The Cue transferring. Don't know if it's in the fall or spring but would love to see that cross the pond.

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

Was watching the new RIPLEY on Netflix last night and Johnny Flynn is in it. Got me wondering if “Motive” was still coming over. Maybe they’re waiting to see how it does at the Olivier Awards this weekend?

Do you think Two Strangers (Carry a Cake in New York) would transfer from West End to NYC Broadway?

It’s not a Broadway show (to me) but I really do think could have a successful run off Broadway.

Thanks all for the links and comments. It will be interesting to see what's left open by the end of the summer/after the Tonys. Available theaters will play a big roll I'm sure. Still hoping for Crazy For You (the first Broadway show I saw) revival...at the Shubert too would be great. I don't think Hell's Kitchen will last too long.

Buena Vista Social Club is coming this fall based on the casting notice. I’m just realizing that Michael Mayer is directing both Grounded and Aida at the Met this fall, so maybe Swept Away will happen in the springtime?
