Madeline'sTwistedNeck said: "God, this incessant attempt to put actual world problems as big as racism in such stupid little aspects of this show will never end? Every time someone says anything even a little bit critical of this production they are deemed as white privileged people who can't possibly fathom the grandness of such a revolutionary revival.
Newsflash, the revival is not revolutionary, is not even that good. Audra as always is great, but miscast vocally and that's not because she's black, it's because her voice doesn't suit the material. The direction is misguided and managed to f* up impactful moments such as the whole strip scene and tries but not hard enough to comment on things such as white washing and the way black people had to mold themselves to white audiences to be perceived as any good, but doesn't dig deep enough in those comments leaving everything as a big "meh?"and not really making us think about what it was trying to achieve in the first place.
The diehard fans of this revival can scream to heavens all they want but it still will lose almost if not all the Tonys to Sunset and the LuPone revival still is the one to beat, and that's just a fact. And yeah Mary, I'm also black so don't try me with the "oh you're white so your opinion doesn't matter""
Thanks for showing us the textbook definition of being deranged.
I thought Woods was wonderful, but they do her dirty by completely ruining the staging of her strip at the end. Unforgivable.
100%. Joy is a star and she sounds stunning on this recording and she was perfection on stage.
I continue to be shocked at how quiet and chilly the reaction to this recording has been. Have all of Audra's fans disappeared suddenly? This was not what happened when the LuPone Gypsy was released.
Also, RE: the earlier comment about LuPone's recording, I actually think Patti's performance on record is incredibly strong and the moments of ego and narcissism (e.g. Rose's Turn) are clearly in service of the character. Sometimes her live performance drifted a little (e.g. if you listen to the final performance I don't think she was as disciplined) - but I suspect that she was in the studio taking a lot of direction from Sondheim to turn out that performance (in a similar way Bernadette's "Losing My Mind" was a little more fragile and emotional on stage in Follies but then in the studio was a very clean musical performance. I understand that Sondheim is heavy handed in the studio. I wonder if we are missing something without him).

I really think we all take too personally each others personal reaction to Audra and this show. I personally loved it- but if others did not- so be it. It is a standard revival of a classic BWAY show- like South Pacific- was years ago. It has nothing to do with race or any current issues- it is basically a mother-daughter relationship story- and, of course, explores the psyche of Rose. We all know- and I sure Wolfe and Audra know it, too- that Audra is not a belter per se--she has a gorgeous soprano- and might be best suited for musicals like Porgy and Bess. But Gypsy is a classic musical- and Audra and Wolfe decided to take it on. It is possibly the number one musical of all-time- at least many people think so--and Audra decided to accept the challenge of appearing in it- and putting her spin on it--which she does admirably, IMO. I loved it and love her singing and love the soundtrack. If someone else does not- and prefers classic belting voices in that role- or does not like Audra's vocal ticks- or whatever- so be it. I don't know if the show is financially successful- I hope it is- but cheers to Audra for taking on a role that is a challenge for her- and bringing the great music and timeless story- even though it is set in the burlesque era- back to BWAY. I don't care if others did not love it---I did and highly recommend it to anyone who loves Audra and scintillating BWAY musical theater.
