Here she is, boys! Here she is, world! Here’s… the cast album now out on digital platforms!
Enjoy, everyone.
(double post)
I’m just listening to the previews right now because I’m hesitant about buying the whole album (I couldn’t stand Joy’s flat delivery live).
“Gotta Get A Gimmick” is a hoot, but they also includes Audra’s little soliloquy before “Rose’s Turn” and it’s giving Viola Davis in “Fences” and I mean that as a compliment
Forgot to ask, what happened to "Tomato sauce goes great with chow mein?"
Jordan Tyson is just as delicious here as she is in the theatre. gorgeous recording!
I agree with FANtomFollies’ post in the other GYPSY thread. I, too, felt that the overture, arguably one of the best in the canon, was completely “devoid of life” and I did not really enjoy this recording.
Others have wondered if Audra’s delivery of this material could have a detrimental effect on her voice. That thought crossed my mind more than a few times while listening to this release. Then I remembered the LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR AND GRILL recording… I’m guessing that Audra must be taking great care of her voice as both LADY DAY and GYPSY seem to be out of her wheelhouse and/or comfort zone vocally.
I have not seen this production, but the sense of drama and raw guts come across in her performance which makes me think that this is a production that needs to be experienced live. I’m not going to rely on this recording as something to go back to for repeated listening.
I think the recording is too pretty. There’s no grit. Flat.
Interesting first listen for me.
It's a pleasure hearing this new take on one of the greatest scores of all time, but I think Dame was onto something here with the lack of grit. (Though the prettiness is an Audra staple.) Her acting here is hinted at in the lead-up to "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and the iconic "Rose's Turn," but this might be one of those shows I'd have to see live to get the full crux of the character.
Danny is a true mensch amongst us mere peasants. Another fine performance, and just as sweet as the candy Herbie sells.
Loving all the Jordan Tyson love here too... surprise Tony nod next week???
Fantastic work from Andy Einhorn and this orchestra.
GYPSY is a score that I know intimately, and I don't consider myself an originalist, but I have so many problems with this album and this production because the changes they've made do not improve upon the score as written.
It all sounds rather sluggish and dry, despite the tempi being more appropriately brisk than the LuPone recording. I don't like the mix on the Overture, but I don't like the mix in the theater for this production either.
How on earth is Audra being allowed to say SUMMA PEOPLE? She's done it every time I've heard her sing the song, and it's one of those singer ticks that drives me up a wall. I bet Sondheim would have given a note on it were he still alive, despite his ambivalence towards GYPSY. (She sounds mostly great on the other songs, though.)
I hate the new dance arrangement for "All I Need Is The Girl" and the guy playing Tulsa doesn't help my enjoyment.
I know they intentionally hired a jazz guy for the Trumpet 1 part, but his playing style almost makes him sound flat when trying to blend with the other brass.
So many odd choices for this production by people who should know better. Maybe it's a cilantro revival...some will love, some will hate, some will be indifferent.

? White privilege too much? How dare someone sing the score in African American Vernacular English and not in a white way?

As with the show itself, the album is at its best at the end- the strip and Rose's Turn are sublime
I’ve only seen first preview, and she sounds less operatic to me on the cast recording. Her “Rose’s Turn” is sublime.

…It’s a vocal tick that’s most prevalent in white singers across Broadway history, but sure, bring race into it just because you disagree with my opinion.
If anything I wish the production had leaned MORE into the specificity of Black music from the 1910s to the 1930s. Let Daryl Waters go wild on the orchestrations/arrangements and give us a sound that is entirely new for GYPSY. instead of this weird hodgepodge of what was done in the original and what Andy Einhorn thinks might sound neat for this production.
But where all things are considered Audra is not the problem of this production. She’s giving one of the better performances of the current season.

Cutting the text of The Strip really hurts its impact IMO.
(ps go Rams!)
This is what I find slightly puzzling about the revival - all this hype around George C Wolfe reinventing the show and Audra loves talking about how it ‘hits different’ but to me it just felt like a regular old production of Gypsy. It did not ‘hit’ like Caroline, Or Change - for example. That’s fine because the show isn’t written that way and I think that’s kind of the point/problem though. I wanted to be shocked and I was more bored. Audra did not disappoint though.

Yep. I had the same reaction.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Gypsy when I went back in previews. I thought the production and Audra were both great. That being said, this new recording doesn't hold a candle to the Peters or LuPone cast albums...

I think Sondheim wrote the best review of this recording way back in 1959:
GOT THE DREAM, YEAH, BUT NOT THE GUTS ....
The Merman, Lansbury and Lupone recordings jump with excitement and passion. This one saunters, even though it has strong dramatics for end Act 1 and end Act 2 but It does not bite. Or, as someone put it, it lacks grit.

I think it depends on your reaction to Audra's singing- I happen to love Audra- and am a fan- have seen her in concert many times- and love her voice. I sat front row center for the show in February- and loved, loved, loved every second- and now love the soundtrack. The show is pretty much color blind- that is the show that was written originally- and Wolfe and company did not tinker with that. Fine by me- Audra did a fine job as Rose, IMO- and the cast was top notch. Audra's voice is different than Lupone- or Lansbury- and she is not normally a belter in the classic sense- but she made this score her own- and her acting was awesome. This is my take- and I will listen to it at the gym- on the bike- and be enthralled for my work out. Everyone is entitled to their opinion- but the show has been selling well for a while- though it seems to have lost momentum recently with attendance going downhill lately- but I view it as an artistic and musical success for Audra as she continues to take on roles that challenge and inspire her.

I haven’t seen this production, but I know Joy Woods’ performance is polarizing. That being said, I’ve never heard Louise sung so beautifully.
