Was hoping--readingall the love from those who've seen the show--that the recording would show some development from her concert rendition of "Rose's Turn" demonstrating she could mold her voice to the material. Apparently, that never happened."
Nope

Perfectly illustrated how lazy this production is creatively."
Uh, Iwouldn’t exactly call this award-winning design. I can’t believe some people care thismuch about a promotional photoshoot."
That's a pretty bad comparison. I guess you could call the above art lazy (photoshop Patty over the title and done). But it actually connects to the show, to what it's about. That's a big Rose gesture, Rose is the essenceshow, and so it works. You see it and you have some sense of what the evening is about.
The photo of the new cast connects to the show not at all. It looks like the actors are about to attend an awards cermony or something. No one is posed or costumedin a way that either informstheir characters or tells the potential buyer aboutthe show. Which makes it look like absolutely no thought was given to conveying the material within the image. So, yeah, lazy."
Yeah, and anyone at beginner level of photoshopping and 3D modeling would clutch their pearls seeing this abomination of artwork. We already had pretty decent tech in 2008. They could've done better if they wanted to.

I get that it's fun to debate the album cover, but I am hyped for this track listing! It looks like we might get some book scenes? I am a sucker for recorded dialogue on cast recordings. I think it's so incredibly important to preserve not only the musical performances of casts, but also their acting. I found this revival in particular to have strong performances, which I am thrilled to see will be potentially preserved.
I would have preferred they included the Entr’acte over some of the dialogue tracks. Especially since they made such a deal about restoring the original orchestrations in some of the early press releases.
I always thought the 2008 artwork looked like an advertisement for Gypsy: On Ice.

At the end of the day, the Patty image conveys something about the show--it even connects to some extent with the history of the show through the drawing of Lansbury striking a dramatic pose used for the Broadway production, and the image of Daly. All three have Rose in a dramatic pose, at least one arm (or both) extended upward. The image of Audra & Co. doesn't connect to anything about the show. Thus the latter is the worse of the two.

Are we legitly getting upset over artwork of a broadway cast recording?!?!?. Never, for me at least, have I ever thought, meh I am not going to get that cast album because of its' artwork. Bahaha don't make me laugh, this is getting ridiculous. Ooops too late. Just don't buy or stream it for gosh sakes.
I think when you are obsessed with theatre, as many of us are, we care about every detail including the artwork (which we do have to look at on a regular basis of course!). None of it really matters of course, and yet it all matters.

This is a discussion board. People are discussing album art. No one is upset.

You must not frequent discussion boards very often, especially ones that exist for fans of the discussion topic.
If you are surprised by people talking about the art on a cast recording here, your mind would be blown by what goes on on discussion boards for Star Wars fans or fans of Masters of the Universe- subtle differences in head sculpts of varying releases of action figures, placement of UPC codes on products, whether new packaging is better or worse than retro packaging.
That fans are discussing and comparing album art and production art is a very normal thing on a discussion board.

I frequent them just enough to see how sometimes even with pages of back and forth of people voicing their same opinions, which they are allowed to have, will go to great lengths to make sure if someone else disagrees or states something because some of the posts are not exactly discussing but arguing. Then will try and in a way gaslight or belittle someone else by typing paragraphs on how said discussion board works.
"Gaslight", lol. No one's being gaslighted here. People who don't like the art or like the art are responding to each other. End of story.

That wasnt directed for this topic on artwork. That was in response to if I ever have been on discussion boards before and that was my reply.
According to Apple Music, the album has a 73 minute running time.
Release has started in certain timezones. Audra's vocals sound excellent, "Some People" and "Rose's Turn" to me sound even better here than in the theatre (early preview). "Coming Up Roses" also sounds great but after studying a bootleg from an early preview I attended for about 5 months now, on this recording it's not quite as intense and ferocious at the end as what I heard in the theatre. I'm not sure if this is how Audra always does it now (tbh it felt unsustainable in theatre). To be fair, I also thought Nicole sounded even better live too.
iHeartRadio Broadway will premiere "If Momma Was Married" at 11:44 AM; it will air twice more before the full album is released tomorrow.

I wish these children would understand what gaslighting actually is because it's never happened on this website. Also, Jimmy is knowledgeable, awesome and always understands the assignment. People in a thread about a cast recording can say anything they want about said cast recording, that's why we're here. Welcome to BWW!

Thanks for the heads up! I listened to it. I really loved that number in the theater. Joy and Jordan blew it out of the water, and their voices were great together. I still don't understand all the negativity on this board towards Joy's performance.
Having watched the Tiny desk concert, I can say that it's not my cup of tea, but glad everyone else is enjoying it. I went back and watched some clips of the Lupone version and it just is definitive to me.
Physical CD and vinyl release is set for July 25.
Kevin Csolak (Tulsa) and Joy Woods (Louise) performing "All I Need Is the Girl":
McDonald and Burstein performing "Small World":
Joy Woods' Little Lamb is also excellent on the recording - RE: the reaction to her live performance. I think many problems: there was so much hype around her as being basically the next big thing, and we also have Laura Benanti's performance still fresh which was so important to the Patti Gypsy - ALMOST, not quite but ALMOST as important as Patti's performance itself. The transformation was stunning - she also managed to downplay her attractiveness in Act one and completely, completely own the audience by the end of the show with her stunning beauty and charisma transformation in Act Two.
In comparison, I think probably at no fault of her own and likely direction (I do think George C Wolfe might have lost his touch a little from the wider production), the same kind of journey and arc just doesn't quite feel there or resonate. Also, it's as if the performance was almost too subtle for the barn of a theatre. Even the Tiny Desk concert I find she comes across a little better in a close up and if anything Audra is too broad. Whereas on stage she is getting lost and eaten up by Audra's mammoth performance.
It's not even like there is anything 'wrong' with it in my opinion. It's just not quite having the impact I think it could and should...

Actually, yes. In this day and age, where souvenir programs are mostly a thing of the past, at least on Broadway, the album art and Playbill covers are our only visual/tangible memories of these shows. So to see some fancy photoshoot which is the polar opposite of what the show represents? Yeah, it sucks.
The stylization of AUDRAGYPSY was nothing short of iconic.

You might be on to something. I sat center orchestra on like the 10th row, so maybe her performance broke through for me in a way it might not have for people further away.
After all the mixed opinions on here about Audra's vocal performance I was expecting not to like every choice she makes but I honestly have no issues with the way she sings it on the album. She sings the score the way I would expect Audra McDonald to sing Gypsy, like no one before her has sung it. It's not a copy of anyone else's Rose, it's Audra's Rose. I do believe these are the original orchestrations, right? But certainly some liberties have been taken with certain musical moments like the salute to the Garden of Eden or music dropping out entirely during the dialogue in "Some People." That's not how it's actually written in the score, right? Someone please confirm I'm not crazy. I didn't mind those moments at all, those were just times when my ears perked up even more hearing something new. The introduction to "Small World" was also new to me. I wish they had included the Entr'acte because these arrangements and the performance of this orchestration is really great. I wanted to hear more instrumental music.
