Lupone was great, but of course they won't hire her. I don't think Melissa McCarthy is a fit though. I'm glad Babara Streisand who is too old for the role is not attached.

I don’t think there ever was any drama. Just the fact that Melissa wasn’t going to be able to fit it into her busy TV (still doing Mike and Molly) and film schedule. It was just a stroke of luck she made time to come and do one scene for the final installment of the revival.

At first McCarthy wasn’t asked to participate because it was assumed her schedule was too full and although Sherman-Palladino wanted her, she was told it couldn’t happen. Eventually, they figured something out and were able to use her briefly. No drama, just difficult scheduling.
Meryl Streep seems the natural choice, but I'd love to see how Melissa McCarthy would tackle the part. Glenn Close might also be good, but like Meryl, she might be a bit too old. They might be able to do some impressive Makeup work though.
The other question is who will take on Gypsy/Louise?
Most of these names are too old. Certainly Meryl and Glenn are.
As for McCarthy, is definitely a question if she can sing it. She’s an incredible actress but this is against type for her.
I agree there doesn’t seem to be a ton of obvious choices that could also headline a film. (Colette would kill it but she probably couldn’t raise the funds.)

I literally say in my post that while these two actresses have the acting and singing chops, they're both too old at this point, unfortunately.
McCarthy would be exciting because she would completely unpredictable. I can imagine every single choice someone like Meryl would make. I can't say the same for McCarthy.
I think Saoirse Ronan would be great for Louise and would look the right age alongside McCarthy. Someone like Rachel Brosnahan might look too mature for Louise. If they cast older, she'd be perfect, though.
Keep Gaga far away from this, please. She's wonderful, but her presence would be distracting.
You can bet your ass this won’t get made made without a MAJOR film star attached to play Rose. If Streisand couldn’t get the project off the ground, you can bet no one is going to finance a movie of this starring Megan Mullaly or Toni Collette. I’m not even sure McCarthy could get it greenlit. Streep seems the obvious choice but she’s really too old.

Toni is an inspired choice, and Melissa is a fantastic actress who would slay if she can sing it. Catherine Zeta-Jones would also be fantastic, as would Viola Davis if she could sing it.
I'm also gonna throw out a young option: Vanessa Hudgens as Louise. She's got plenty of charisma and could sing it, but I'm not sure if she has the dramatic chops.

Vanessa Hudgens is not a movie star. There are plenty of A list film stars who could be ideal as Louise, I can’t imagine they wouldn’t cast one of them. But it’s still all going to hinge on them getting a Rose who could sell it. How well can McCarthy sing? I did think she was brilliant in Can you Ever Forgive Me?
