In saying they were given byes, I think After Eight simply meant these shows didn't have to perform in the first round of the playoffs and would automatically advance to the second round to perform against the winner of the 2 wild card shows.
It's always entertaining to watch people with no knowledge of sports try to use sports analogies.
In football, each team gets a bye week which just refers to a week off -- during the regular season.
I'm sort of curious in how After Eight apparently is suggesting critics grade on a curve; he is apparently suggesting that only great shows should great reviews (an understandable impulse), but mediocre shows shouldn't get mediocre reviews - they should get pans. This speaks volumes to the highly polarized way After Eight writes on this board; either it's great or it's sh!t. There is no room for nuanced reviews (such as those that greeted Lucky Guy, The Nance, Kinky Boots and The Assembled Parties for the most part -- Vanya got mostly raves if I recall and Matilda has had near-unanimous thought not-wholly-unanimous raves.)
Besides suggesting a general disconnect from the reality of critical opinion of the shows he selected to comment about, I think I better understand the faults in his own opinion of criticism in general now.

"he is apparently suggesting that only great shows should great reviews (an understandable impulse),"
Yes, what an unreasonable notion!
"but mediocre shows shouldn't get mediocre reviews - they should get pans."
Mediocre and bad shows should not get positive reiews. Three stars out of four, four stars out five are not mediocre reviews. They're positive reviews. And for the shows in question, completely undeserved.

A bye in sports is given to the top team and earned.
The shows that opened this season while certainly not wholly artistically satisfying all had something to commend them be it the unbridled joy of Kinky Boots or the masterful stage direction of Matilda or the charm of Cinderella or the top 40 memories of Motown. Audiences are flocking to them in record numbers and generating great word of mouth. None of them needed a bye. They captured the imagination and are seen as good value for a very expensive buck.

"A buy in sports is given to the top team and earned" Uh, No.
A bye can mean both. During the NFL season all times get a bye week when they're off. (Having a strategically placed bye week can be crucial for the long-term success of the season.)
After the regular season is over, the number one and two seeds of both the AFC and NFC get a bye week during the first round. (The three and four seeds have to play the wild card teams that week. The Packers are the only NFC team to go into the playoffs as a 6 seed and win the Super Bowl, btw)

Your explanation is correct. Not his.
"While I agree with you, most of the audience finds Rock of Ages to be terrific and that's a monumental piece of dung."
Let's hear it for monumental pieces of dung! And for the millions of dregs of the earth who love them!
HEAR HEAR!
Clyde, I love that graphic! When someone uses the phrase "...we all know that", it makes me wonder how the OP managed to find the time to ask ALL of us. from RC in Austin, Texas
And for the shows in question, completely undeserved.
They were completely deserved because they were writing their own opinions, not simply publishing yours. It's not their fault you can't accept it.
The original poster is using the word bye as if someone was giving those shows a pass and looking the other way while they according to his opinion should have been more closely scrutinized.
The bye weeks each team gets during the year has all to do with scheduling and nothing to do with quality. The bye teams get during playoffs are earned by being the best.
My post questioned his use of the word because neither description fits.
After Eight, I'm curious to know what some of your favorite shows of the past few seasons have been? Doesn't seem like you like any modern musicals or shows.
That's like asking an old man at the nursing home who his favorite rappers are. Be prepared to hear a barrage of offensiveness about how things aren't like they used to be.

The sexual tension between Jordan and AfterEight is always so palpable in these threads.
That's sick. When After Eight blows his load its like someone blowing the dust off an old table.

Ripped Man,
The past few seasons, it has been mostly revivals: The Glass Menagerie (Cambridge), Golden Boy, Donnybrook!, Happy Hunting. I also liked Nice Work If You Can Get It, Don't Dress for Dinner, and the current Nikolai and the Others.
As for head-over-heels love, I think back most recently to La Cage, 70, Girls, 70, Georgy, Applause, Dear World, Promises, Promises, Darling of the Day (musicals) and Forty Carats, Cactus Flower, and The Star-Spangled Girl (plays). There may well have been others in the interim.
Happy memories, to be sure. But all that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

I didn't find Vanya middling at all. I saw it twice and was highly entertained both times.
When did insulting a poster and telling them they should kill themselves become acceptable? Some of you need to get a new hobby.
