The Wrong Man is a concept album - there is no cast recording available yet of which I am aware. Maybe next year.

Interesting the article mentioned a few off broadway shows included Alice of Heart which I love. Has an off broadway show been nominated before?

If Moulin Rouge! is eligible this year, wouldn't that seem like catnip for Grammys voters? As much as I adore Hadestown and think it deserves to win every award this year, the Grammys have always proven that quality doesn't necessarily beat pop music connections...

Alice By Heart will never be nominated for a Grammy. But, the show does not have to be a show that was on Broadway, sometimes they are staged concerts.

According to Wikipedia, most of the non-Broadway nominations in in the last couple decades have been live albums of concert productions, such as Jesus Christ Superstar Live, West Side Story at the SF symphony, and Sweeney Todd at the NY Philharmonic, Anyone Can Whistle at Carnegie Hall, etc.
But from what I can tell, the last time an album was nominated specifically from an OFF-BROADWAY production was in 2000 with Hedwig and the Angry Inch - unless I missed one.

Posted: 11/20/19 at 5:28amI will be extremely disappointed if hadestown doesn't perform on the telecast. Speaking of, I don't see why the fates shouldn't sing at the Superbowl, like Hamilton.

Nominations are out. Would love to have seen The Prom nominated.

The fact that deadline is mentioning the controversy....does say something.

Posted: 11/20/19 at 1:26pmI know it won’t win, but I’d like to see Oklahoma win, for two reasons. It turned a classic on its side...I love its country twang, and consider myself far from a country music fan (I hate 99% of it). Also, whoever thought that Oklahoma could be so sexy. I don’t know who decided how Damon D should sing those songs, but they were so different from anything I have ever heard related to OK that it deserves recognition.

For those you have seen it, is the music really wonderful in Harry Potter?

yes. It doesn’t deserve to beat Hadestown, IMO, but it is quite good.

Isn't the award supposed to be for a musical? Why are plays getting nominated?

The majority of the current Hadestown was released in a Grammy-nominated concept album, so the Grammys didn’t see her work as composer as being over 50% original.
The Musical Theater Album category was recently updated to include concept recordings, compilations of musical theatre music, cabarets, etc., so it’s a very broad category. I think the Harry Potter album fits in this category as it is music made/arranged for the theatre. And yes, it does belong in the list of nominees in my opinion.
I think it’s too bad The Prom missed out here. I think it had the best shot out of the rest of the Best Musical nominees.
André De Shields, Anaïs Mitchell, Todd Sickafoose, and Ali Stroker have a chance to add a Grammy to their Tony from this year.

I feel like it's now a battle between Moulin Rouge and Hadestown, the two most popular. As much as we all love MR, I still think Hadestown will win because of its original story - literally - the entire story is told throughout the entire album!

Posted: 11/21/19 at 1:07amI can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve made it through the full Moulin Rouge cast recording. This is Hadestown’s to lose and would be a nice way for the Grammys to honor Anaïs Mitchell’s largely understated career in the music industry. The album is exquisite in every way.

YES. I actually saw Harry Potter (both parts) last night. The music is absolutely BRILLIANT. I wish it would win, but I know it will most likely go to Hadestown or...maybe Oklahoma! is the other option.

You can find the Harry Potter music on YouTube or stream it on Spotify. I'd highly recommend it. What Imogen Heap does is incredible.
