I'm excited for this! One of my all-time favorite musicals! I'm really not concerned about possible edits. Maybe they'll air it with a viewer discretion disclaimer. As for the nudity, I really don't care one way or the other, and of course they won't allow full frontal, but butts have been seen on network TV as far back as NYPD BLUE (1993-2005). They can make their point without the actors waving their junk in the audience's face.

Didn’t they leave the nudity in when they broadcast Schindler’s List? Also, going way back, breasts were shown during Roots. I don’t think nudity is prohibited by FCC regulations, but language is.
Last night, I had the absolute joy of attending a concert with Audra McDonald and the San Diego Symphony. She talked about her experience with the TV version of "Sound of Music," and then mentioned that "Hair" would be the next TV production. Her comment: "How exciting!". That's what I think, as well.......how exciting!

I remember suggesting MAN OF LA MANCHA as a possible contender a few years ago. I got some negative feedback because of the show’s content. Now, if they don’t completely dilute and destroy HAIR, we’ll have SPRING AWAKENING soon...or at least MOLM. Ha ha...
You just know they're going to do it concert style with big stars like the did for JCS. They're probably thrilled not to have to anything with multiple expensive sets for awhile.
I was also baffled when I heard the news. It can be done without the nudity, but they'd have to cut both "Sodomy" and "Colored Spade" methinks.

Those are the two numbers I keep mentioning getting cut while discussing this with friends.
I can't wait to see how those american's who have their heads inserted into Trump's rectum react to Abie Baby...
Is NBC really ready to push the envelope and do it the way it should be staged?? I'm not so sure about this...however, Gavin Creel just has to be Claude again! I know he's had surgery but he was fantastic. Cassie Levy was Sheila, so who knows? They are not "Alice Cooper". I'll reserve judgement for now, (but I totally agree, they need to get Tina Landau)

Why do you think anyone who supports Trump would watch this in the first place? They would already know it's about hippies, which means they're going to refuse to watch it, period. Or if they somehow didn't know what it was about from its prior existence or the commercials, as soon as the first hippie shows up on stage they'd just go "Ew, Liberal Propaganda" and change the channel. You're not going to see any of those reactions period because they have literally no reason to want to even try it.

This was my first thought, too. I bet they picked this specifically because it lends itself to a concert style staging

The cut off age for the draft at the time was either 25 or 26. Let's not have actors in their 40s, being broadcast in high definition, acting worried about potentially being drafted.
Nice to see myself quoted in this thread. Annoying Actor Friend has the definitive take on this thus far:
Having said that, I am available to provide consultation from original cast members if they really plan to do this right. They should be talking to them rather than Jim Rado, in my admittedly biased opinion.
Jim, God bless him, consults on new revivals and adds a ton of stuff, both new and from pre-Broadway material, that he has yet to codify into a further revised script for the licensor (the current version dates from 1995; Tams-Witmark confirmed to me that any new changes only appear in productions if Rado works with them directly, and they have not received nor are they able to pass on any of the new material), but every time it gets farther away from what made the show work.
(Some of the Tribe, as they call themselves, have speculated that, being 85, he still tinkers with the show so much because he's gradually forgetting that he wrote it in the first place.)
I'm looking forward to hearing the song about sodomy on national Tv. LOL.
Given that sodomy is the technical term, is there a reason that word can't be said on network TV? In fact, I think every "bad" word in that song is the technical term. I don't see why that song would have to be cut.
Well let's try the PC police on this one-
"I'm a
Colored spade
A nigga
A black nigga
A jungle bunny
Jigaboo coon
Pickaninny mau mau
Uncle Tom
Aunt Jemima
Little Black Sambo
Cotton pickin'
Swamp guinea
Junk man
Shoeshine boy
Elevator operator
Table cleaner at Horn & Hardart
Slave voodoo
Zombie
Ubangi lipped"
And i've left out the White House part of the lyric.
(to be fair- Horn & Hardart is a reference that no one will get)
Hi folks, a lot of you addressed my comment about AIDA and I wanted to clarify that I completely blanked that ABC is Disney's network. So sorry! Don't want anybody thinking I'm an idiot.

I kind of get the choice, actually. I mean, yeah, it’s going to be Bowdlerized, but it’s a great opportunity to cast huge pop stars of the moment to do one song and pull in ratings (I’m not really familiar with the show, I just know what’s described here, it’s reputaion, and the Actor’s Fund Concert from a decade ago).
Btw, while I’m at it, I’ll put a bet in for Demi Lovato singing Hippie Life, if it’s included.
Actually some of us here on the board ARE old enough to remember Horn and Hardart diners around Times Square. Yeah, they were known in even earlier times as the brand name of some Automats around town, but by the late 60's I knew them as greasy spoon diners, along with Chock Full of Nuts diners.

I bet it was in influence cause guess who is on board:

SO happy @nbc is doing HAIR as their next live musical! Here's a deconstruction from the (Grammy nominated!) CD of my Actors Fund concert! Listen to these three amazing singers: @BrandiMassey @ledisi and @shaynasteele THEY ARE INCREDIBLE!
Shame!
I wouldn't say hopping on the bandwagon to promote an old "deconstruction" of his necessarily constitutes Seth being on board.
I did, but that doesn't mean he's part of the show.
