She implies that Irene is a gold-digger and offed her previous husbands. And then we see that unlike Dolly, Irene has a legit business and is a lovely lady. I don't like that aspect of Hello Dolly! at all.
" I also think it's a strength of this revival that IMO Baldwin and Creel are so appealing and their chemistry is strong enough that this seems like the right outcome.
Also ... is Irene always played as much younger than Dolly? In this revival, it just seems like Irene is pairing off with someone more age-appropriate. But in the movie both Irene and Dolly seem very young and it looks more like blatant gold-digging on Dolly's part.
This show has just been nominated for 10 Outer Critic's Circle Awards including Best Revival of a Musical and Bette Midler, David Hyde Pierce, Gavin Creel, and Kate Baldwin getting nominations.
She's not enough of a name to keep a revival of this stature afloat but I'm rather shocked Andrea Martin has never done the show (though she's played Dolly in THE MATCHMAKER twice.)
She's ideal in just about every respect.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
