the sacramento bee finally got its rave review in!. Crowder is a pretty solid reviewer and while there's nothing really new here, its clearly laid out and concise.
Several "Hamilton" cast members performed at the Oakland A's Opening Night game on Monday. Joshua Henry sang the National Anthem and other performers sang "God Bless America" during the 7th inning. Those cast members included Sabrina Imamura, Julia K. Harriman, Dan Belnavis, Desmond Nunn, Isaiah Johnson, Keenan D. Washington, Karli Dinardo and Afra Hines.

saw hamilton last night in row c 114. for those worried about being "too close" in row c
dont it was fantastic. the only thing you lose is seeing some of the back row dancers feet and calfs, and lose a little of the few times with the dancers are lying down. Now im 6ft tall, so if you are of less height this may make a bigger difference
It was fantastic to see the actors so close, and their expressions and emotions.
Always admire wed eve shows when they put in a great performance after doing it just a few hours earlier
Extended ovation time for room where it happens and one last time...
I also noticed (in answer to another poster) that the king george track does have one more scene in addition to "youre never gonna be president" where the actor appears with the entire cast (in addition to has three king scenes) where he is in the background up in the top left corner during the entire song of Who lives Who Dies, and is dressed in the off white colonial uniform.
This show is truly wonderful.
I have no scheduled viewings of it until 6/20, but will certainly find a way in to see it before that....
Saw it today. Bourgeois claptrap with about as much subtlety as being hit in the head with a brick, but you can't deny that that staging is phenomenal.
I was lucky enough to win 2 lottery tickets to last night's show! I was given orchestra seats in rows A and "partial view" C.
I thought the show lived up to the hype. I was very impressed with Joshua Henry and hope to see him in future SF shows. He really is a strong performer. I just loved watching him. I was a bit disappointed with Solea Pfeiffer's vocals last night, granted it was a 2-show day. Maybe she was coming down with something; she sounded like she needed to give her vocals a long rest. The choreography and staging were outstanding. The way the show was just non-stop, often presenting a completely different scene one after another, was phenomenal. (A show that I thought didn't have very good scene transitions was Curious Incident. They were so abrupt...not in a good way.)
I don't listen to hip-hop but I really like the music and have been listening to it daily for about a month. I just wonder how it will stand up to the test of time.
The stage is quite high. I wouldn't choose row A if I had to pay regular price. The partial view C1 was actually a bit better. Fortunately, I'm seeing it again in a couple of weeks from M10 so I'll hopefully get a better view of the stage.
Overall, I thought the hype was well-deserved. I was inspired by all the talent on and off stage, plus the vision and the daring, that made this show a reality.
WOW. Just got back from seeing it tonight. We had first seen the OBC in the NY production a couple of weeks after opening on Labor Day weekend 2015. We were blown away. Since the OBCR had not been released, we went in cold. This time, I went in very familiar with the score and with strong memories of the original Broadway production.
Still astonished. Every aspect of the work and the production is masterful. The dizzying choreography and staging, the way each number was brilliantly visualized and presented and the score is so varied and structured perfectly. Instead of focusing on following the story or lyrics, in the moments when I wasn't being wowed by the performances, I kept on being reminded at how GOOD it all was.
And speaking of performances, I was expecting to be riveted by Joshua Henry as Burr and Michael Luwoye as Hamilton - and I was indeed! Enough of the silly discussion of Emily Raver-Lampman's hairstyle. It fit as well as anything and was as fierce as the character! I had also heard reports from the first performances that Isaiah Johnson was finding the Washington character. Well he found him. Totally compelling and commanding. (I had a few issues with Jordan Dominica's Jefferson, but there's only one Daveed Diggs). A solid, talented cast. And it was rewarding to see such skilled, yet different performances - and reassuring to see direction that encourages it.
I'm reminded of breakfast one morning at a diner at the Russian River. A smartass at our table asked the grizzled waitress (who in my memory I see with a cigarette hanging from her lips, although that's unlikely) - what made their pancakes "world famous" as claimed on the menu.
"Because they're that f***ing good" she drawled in reply. Why has Hamilton had such acclaim? Because it's that f***ing good!
Thanks for the fantastic review, MarkBear! Also, I really want pancakes now. :)
I'm thinking of flying from Philly to San Francisco this week to catch this cast. Yes, I am insane. Does anyone know if Josh Henry has a regularly scheduled day off? I know anything can happen, but research hasn't revealed to me if he has a typical off day. I do think based on my Twitter stalking that Michael Luwoye is off on Sundays, if that helps anyone. Our primary purpose would be to see Joshua and Emmy. Fingers crossed!
hey Markbearsf-great review...this cast is doing a fantastic job imo and gets better each time I see it which is scary given how fantastic it is already. I thought Jordans Jefferson has gotten very very good especially from where he started first preview, so you are right there is only one daveed diggs, and i think Jordans take is so good now i dont notice or miss Daveed in the role....
Have you noticed if Josh Henry has any regular days off?
Coming from Philly this week to see it--hurray!
And yes, no one has really lived up to Daveed in NYC either (though I loved Andrew Chappelle). I think with James Monroe Iglehart in now the role with have the level of charisma, albeit of a different sort, that it needs.

These are quibbles and much is personal taste. But, I thought he played Jefferson just a bit too broadly fey and humorous and came off more ineffectual than I think is called-for. It's not as if it isn't in the text, and he landed all his lines and laughs with great effect. But for my tastes, it could have been more effective with a different take.
BUT STILL - a great production that I still hope to win lottery tickets to see again.
Pleased to say that James Monroe Iglehart does indeed fill Daveed's shoes. Maybe they always needed to hire a big guy to fill big shoes? Anyway, he's great. Brings his own flair and an entirely different physical presence but it works wonderfully. I think the fact that he actually was Jefferson in the very earliest workshop perfs and that he's worked closely with Lin thru Freestyle Love Supreme gives him a layer of comfort greater than anyone but Daveed. He's fantastic.

I was so looking forward to seeing this show after having seen it twice in NY! However, I need to sell my Hamilton SF tickets due to unexpected scheduling conflicts . Only looking to recover my cost for 4 tickets in premium center orchestra (May 28 at 1:00 PM, row J) and 2 tickets in premium center loge (July 14 at 8:00 PM, row A). $529 each seat. Please PM me if you are looking for tickets!
Hi All! I am being relocated for work and will be in Southern California this weekend looking at housing. Unfortunately, this means I need to sell my Hamilton-San Francisco tickets. They are for Friday May 12 @ 8:00 PM. It sucks, but being realistic, I am not going to have the time to go and would rather have the cash. Once I am settled, I will have to turn my attention to Hamilton-Los Angeles! Orchestra Side Row V Seats 14 and 20. Although they are not together, there are only 2 seats in-between them. I can't imagine the people sitting in-between wouldn't scoot over one seat to accommodate. Asking $800 for the pair, but will consider a reasonable offer.
I pretty much agree with the Bee. I just saw the Sunday show with Ryan Alvarado as Hamilton. For me it wasn't nearly as powerful as Luwoye. Ryan seemed to speak the lines more than sing them and he didn't bring the swag that Hamilton needed. Especially up against Joshua Henry, there was no comparison. Even the rap battles fell flat for me, missing passion and intensity. This is my third time seeing Hamilton and I see Jordan Donica (Jefferson) being more slapstick and goofy...Jefferson to me is oblivious/clueless but not necessarily goofy. I also had Julia Harriman as Angelica. She didn't bring the confidence and power to the role that Angelica deserved. I felt the character was supposed to be the match to Hamilton (if not more) but she played it without any depth. Her voice during "Satisfied" blended in with the ensemble and lacked any power.
I REALLY enjoyed Joshua Henry - man, does he bring passion to the role! The dancers are simply amazing, and the rest of the cast are wonderful (although I do agree with some posters re Iman/Reynolds)
Just wanted to share my thoughts. I really missed Emmy/Angelica and Luwoye/Hamilton in their roles during this matinee.
ryan alvarado as hamilton seems to get a big yes or big no from folks. my friend who is an excellent theatre buff saw both ryan(ryan was in on a wed eve recently) and michael and liked them both a lot, just said they were very different takes
hope to see ryan at least once and may go on a sunday mat to increase my likelyhood of catching his performance
also just recently watched a complete video of Javier playing hamilton in NYC with most of the OBC and absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED his performance
