Hallelujah Baby! won 6 Tonys including Best Musical after it closed, as did Patricia Routledge that same season from another Styne flop, Darling of the Day (in a tie with Leslie Uggams)

Thanks! I always wondered this and whether Falsettos would be a "first" if they win a Tony for any of the categories they got nominated in.

Another Jason Robert Brown show, Parade, also two Tonys (Best Score and Best Book) after it closed. James Joyce's The Dead won Best Book in 2000 shortly after closing.

Tracy Letts won Best Actor in a Play for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in 2013 a few months after the production ended its run. That's what first came to mind.
Annaleigh Ashford won Featured Actress in a Play in 2015 for "You Can't Take It With You" after it had closed.
Frank Langella won Best Actor last year the same day as the closing performance of the Father. That would be the most recent.
It looks like, in recent years anyway, closed plays tend to get more awards than closed musicals.

NOWa, unless it extended, The Father didn't close the day of the Tonys because I remember a week or two later, it was ananiucned that Langella wouldn't perform the final performance due to being ill.

Oh, I think you're right. I just remembered it wrong. I knew there was something noteworthy about that closing haha.

Lots of shows have won in various categories. It is no big deal.

Actually, it is quite a big deal. A show that closes before the Tonys has a much less chance of winning. In the 71 years of the Tonys being handed out, of course there are going to be some winners from closed shows, but at least 90% (this is a guess) have been from shows that were still open.

The most recent revival of Follies closed back in January 2012, and a few months later, won the Tony for Best Costume Design of a Musical.

My point is that it happens regularly, with sufficient frequency that it is nothing unusual...with one exception.
If a closed show wins Best Musical, you can bet it was not a good season for musicals. The only case I can recall is Hallelujah! Baby!, which I loved but the critics did not; add to that the facts that it was open back in an era where there were no TV ads, no credit card sales, no internet or tele charge to make it easy to buy tickets...it was a box office flop that lasted (and struggled for most of its) 8 months. It only won Best Musical because its competition was also weak.
Ironically, there were a number of musicals that season that I liked / loved, but none was a slam-bang success...and ALL received mixed reviews. I loved Hallelujah, Darling of the Day, The Happy Time (which was significantly hurt by the decision to inflate it to a huge production; today, it would open in Circle in the Square (I saw a production at the Signature Theatre in Va, in which the performance space was configured as close to the Circle plan as any I have been in) or the Music Box; enjoyed Henry! Sweet Henry. All were flops.
Also, and this will get criticized, unless it is a limited engagement, if a show is closed by the Tony Awards, I'll bet that a study would conclude that the vast majority would not have been serious contenders even if they were opened...unless it was a bad season.
