I got to see Benanti twice and Shoop once and Shoop is an amazing talent - charming, beautiful, funny and with a voice you will not forget. Do not despair, you are in for a truly great show!
Saw Laura Shoop three times and she was Terrific (may come off as more vulnerable than Bennati- who we did not see.
Sorry that Michael McGrath had to leave the show - hope he is alright and not sure if the show clicks the same way without him. The time we saw it with his understudy playing Sipos, it seemed as though the show had lost its heart.
I've seen it twice, once with Benanti, once with Shoop, and honestly, I preferred Shoop. I find her soprano less sharp and more subtle, and I also found her performance more sweetly charming and vulnerable, rather than brassy and too angry. I felt worse for Georg in the cafe before intermission and disliked her when Benanti played it -- Shoop had just the right mix of sadness against Georg being too aggressive in that scene. I thought they had a wonderful chemistry.
I know she missed at least 2 or 3 last month when she was sick again.
I saw Laura Shoop as well. I thought she was excellent too. I haven't seen Laura Benanti though, so I can't compare.

Saw the show for the third time last night. This was my first time seeing it without Laura Benanti. I LOVEDLOVED the show when I saw it with Laura. I still enjoyed the show last night, but the show felt a little "off" without her.

I saw Laura Shoop in the beginning of April and thought she was great and loved the show. I saw it again with Benanti at the end of April and liked Benanti's Amalia better. There was just something about Benanti and Zach's chemistry that I enjoyed more and I definitely laughed more the second time. They're both wonderful, I just like sassy Amalia better and Benanti's comedic timing is great.
Side note: Michael McGrath is definitely missed in the show. His understudy is good but lacking in some areas.
