I personally can't wait, knowing a little bit about the show already, I have to say, it's really going to be a great concert, and the cast is delightful.
Agreed! I will be VERY disappointed if there isn't an "I Love My Dead Gay Son" number! I am so excited for this show! Pretty much my dream team working together!
While I honestly like Annaleigh Ashford, I really would have loved Kristen Bell as Veronica. I know it's just a staged concert, but when I heard her name mentioned it seemed like a perfect fit. This is something I am extremely excited about. I wanted so bad to go out and see the Jawbreakers reading, but unfortunately missed it. I truly love the idea that people are taking these darker comedies and trying to make them into musicals.
"Heather Duke: Christine Lakin (Reefer Madness; cohost of TV's "The Kilborn File"; upcoming movie You Again)"
Really, no love for Step By Step?
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
Jenna Leigh Green as Heather #1? YES!!! This needs to come to Broadway for that reason alone.
As much as I love Annaleigh, I can't quite picture her as Veronica. She's more of a Heather McNamara in my mind, but I'm curious about how she'll do.
And Christine Lakin? She was the only person on Step by Step who I thought could actually act. She can sing too? Awesome!
"I Love My Dead Gay Son" needs to be a song. There are so many great one-liners they could turn into numbers. I can't believe how excited I am over this even though I can't go see it.
Oh, also: I called Joe's Pub to get a ticket for a friend. They are COMPLETELY sold out, and sold the tickets released back to them, and do not expect to have many, if any at all, seats available day of or in cancellations. So...hopefully you all have tickets!
NY Post article with a few spoilers, I guess, of some of the numbers that will be performed...
The song “Dead Gay Son” is sung by the father of a jock whose murder was, as in the film, framed to look like a gay suicide pact.
“He has this terrific positive message,” says the show’s co-writer, Kevin Murphy, “because he says, ‘My son’s a homosexual, and that don’t scare me none, but now I love, love, love my dead gay son.’ This father learned to accept his son, and sends this message of tolerance.”
The concert tonight was BRILLIANT. Everyone in the cast was absolutely perfect, and the costumes and hair cracked me up. The songs are some of the best O'Keefe has ever written, it's a delicious blend of pop satire and dark, moody angsty 80s rock. My personal favorites: "Beautiful", "Candy Store", and "Our Love is God."
