How will Frozen 2 affect Frozen Broadway?

I think part of the issue with Frozen is a lot of its fanbase will have grown up and moved on. The other Disney musicals have nostalgia on their side, and that can be powerful. I dont think as many adults were as caught in the frozen bubble, and even ones I know who did love the movie actually have no interest in the show. which kinda surprised me.

It will be interesting to see if the sequel does well. If it does it will probably help give the show a boost in the short term

I hope it will only do good for the show. I really like frozen and I loved the broadway production. I of course love Aladdin and The Lion King movies but I didn’t like the broadway productions at all. Frozen is the best Disney musical on broadway in my opinion so I hope ittl have a very long life and the movie will only help it!

Holy crap, you weren’t kidding about the ticket prices. Premium is $149 and most orchestra are $99-$115. Interesting. I wish other shows would follow suit.

I think if Frozen 2 wasn't hitting theaters this thanksgiving, Disney would be closing up Frozen on Bway this winter.

Disney is proving that their older IP is what sells - the 2019 Lion King remake is about to become one of the top 10 most successful films of all time. People of all ages connect to nostalgia - this is why Disney is remaking all of their own things at a much higher rate than producing new film properties.

It also doesn't help that word of mouth for Frozen on Broadway is just not good. For a show about magic, it lacks more magic in the entire show than Lion King has in its opening sequence.

Just want to point out that the live-action Aladdin didn't really boost the musical. It's doing about the same as it did last summer.

I disagree with the claim that “Let It Go” is the only great song in Frozen (“Do You Want To Build A Snowman” and “Love Is An Open Door” are also pretty strong) but it is the only song from Frozen that lends itself to a big showstopper format (which is why it’s moved from the end of Movie Act 1 to the end of Musical Act 1). I think that the big problem with Frozen is that it isn’t really suited for stage. The big quest-based narrative is restricted by such a small space, and the action sequences are heavily limited (the wolf chase from the original is much more exciting than the collapsing bridge, and makes Anna seem like a FAR stronger character). I also feel like Michael Grandage’s more serious approach is another fault. Trying to make it like Shakespeare is a flawed idea because the characters in Frozen aren’t developed or complex enough for this to work...

It wouldn’t surprise me if they edited Anna and Elsa’s appearance a bit, for instance by making Elsa’s “badass clothing” for “Monster” look more like the “badass clothing” she will wear for Frozen 2. However, Anna’s hair colour is directly relevant to the plot (Elsa’s curse turns it increasingly white during the second act), so I hope the new-look wigs reflect this...

Is for real? Sources? This is truly greedy corporate synergy at it's finest if it's true. There's no need for it anyway, Elsa's hair hasn't changed that much, it's still the side brain we all know. Anna's is mostly down with side pulls in the trailers, and actually while I like it as it seemingly could show character growth (if this sequel is done well enough), I'll ask again what would be the point? That hairstyle is going to clash with all her costumes in the musical...

I’ll be polite here, but I disagree on both levels, though I recognise the concerns and consider them valid. First of all, mediocre movies tend not to hurt Broadway productions - the mediocre remakes of Phantom, Aladdin, The Lion King have not hurt the Broadway productions one bit. Because sequels to musicals are far rarer, the effect of those is still relatively unknown, but Mamma Mia is still doing well in the West End, and the Mary Poppins revival is arriving there in a blaze of publicity. Frozen Broadway also has an advantage in that Frozen II will be building on Mythology that was first introduced in the stage version (the idea that Anna and Elsa’s mother may be linked to some mysterious mythical creatures). Seeing the stage version won’t be too much of a prerequisite, but this new addition could be quite the USP. There’s a reason why the start of the tour is coinciding with the release of Frozen II...

Secondly, I am optimistic about Frozen II based on what we have seen so far. Most of Disney and Pixar’s sequels have been unessecary, but they have generally been fun and creative films, and it’s most likely that Frozen II will follow in those footsteps. The emphasis on myth and magic could allow Frozen II to feel fresh, and the new songs premiered at D23 seem to have been well received. I personally love the trailers we have had so far, because they take a character often criticised for running away from her problems (I.e Elsa) and get her to run TOWARDS them. Of course, explaining the origins of Elsa’s powers is a big risk, and Frozen II will not find it easy to recapture the sense of novelty and spontaneity which made the original so successful. However, I personally believe that at worst, it will be a solid sequel, and at best, it could far surpass the original. And anyway, if you don’t like Frozen II, you can always ignore it...

All the feedback I’ve seen from the D23 Expo this weekend about Frozen 2 was positive. I’ve seen lots of comments from people who said they were unsure before the Expo and now plan to see it.

As for the Broadway show and tour, I expect to see a lot of cross-marketing as others here have stated. Though I expect we will see it in both NY and LA and possibly at the theme parks where they usually do extended previews before a movie releases.

Overall, I think the movie will only have positive impact on the show. If the movie is really good, people will want more. If the movie is really bad, people will want to see something more familiar.

As a side note based on D23 feedback, it does seem we will at least get an Anna and Kristoff proposal in this one. If that wedding doesn’t happen in the movie, I expect a Frozen short to follow up as a minimum. Similar to what they did with Tangled.

Except those two films are actually excellent. Well written, ACTUAL character development, etc. The more times I watch Frozen (and it's been a while for good reason) the more it ticks me off because of what it could have been.
