i just can't see her as Brooklyn.
she dosen't have the look and the edge that eden had.
don't get me wrong, i have been one of diana's biggest fans since american idol.
i'm sure she has the voice to play Brooklyn, but can she act the part?
Penny is such a cute and sweet character, while brooklyn is somewhat sweet, but has this attitude she carries with her.
anyone else feel the same wayy?
I am very excited to see Diana as Brooklyn. I believe that she can play the part and give it all it needs. I am going to drive 5 hours to see the show :)
Well, if she can act it, then I think her appearance is fairly secondary. Not to say that looks don't matter, because the often unfortunate reality is that they do, but... she doesn't look like Eden, so what? I don't think there's really a specific appearance that the character needs, within reason.

I think it's weird that Diana is playing the part only because Eden is so freaking tall. It will be weird to see someone shorter in the role, but I have no doubt she's got the singing chops for the role. Can't wait to see it in ATL.
---> has anyone see the professionally shot videos of BKYLN on youtube.com? They're not bootlegs. Anyways, was the show "better looking" in NYC? The Colorado tryout set seems so...cheap?
When it was first announced she was going into "Hairspray" people reacted the same way..."I can't see her in that role." I haven't seen her as Penny, but from what I've been reading, she seems to have stepped up to the plate and proven herself. I say, let's see what she gives us in "Brooklyn."
I think she'll be fine. And there's not really anything we can do about it except have "FAITH." And if Mark and Barri do... well... so should we.
It's really such an ensemble effort too. And there's gonna be Cleavant Derricks again Melba Moore (that'll be interesting) and, according to brooklynthemusical.info, Lee Morgan (YESSSSS!) and JULIE REIBER!!!!! - one of my favorite people everrrrrr.
Eden is really not that tall. At all.
Oh, Eden = AMAZING... but it's the story, the other four actors, etc. all make bklyn so fantastic, not just the incredible person that is Eden Espinosa.
But Eden is amazing.

Really? She seems so tall in all the photos. I mean I've never met her but she seems to be such a tall, lanky person.
i'm 4'11" and she's not too gigantic in height past me. i mean she's not 5'1" and she's not 5'11" either. And who says that Brooklyn needs to be really tall? =P

No, that's not what I meant. I'm just saying Eden is tall with some mega pipes, so it will be interesting to see a diff. take on the character.

I'm still pissed that they're having two tours and that I may not be able to see Diana in the part...
threadjack:
are the dates announced for tour 2?

No, and probably won't be for awhile. Which pisses me off since I waited for what seemed like forever for the 1st tour dates only to find the closest stop 10 hours away!!!!!!
Eden is like...5'5, tops, I'd guess.

She's got the voice for the part, no doubt. I think she'll be fine, especially since the producers made a point of publicly talking about how she impressed them all during her audition. She pulled off the character of Penny and before that she pulled off a very different character -Maria in West Side Story. Whether she can completely overcome the flaws of the Brooklyn story is another question.
Umm...what kind "acting" is involved for the role of Brooklyn? All you need to have a kick-a$$ voice, which Diana has.
Diana can pull it off. Her look really doesn't have much to do with it (Shelley Thomas, who used to understudy Eden, looks NOTHING like her), and you shouldn't say she doesn't have that "edge" until you've seen her try the material.

True. Well, whether or not it requires a lot of "acting" it's still a musical therefore she should be a good actor at least.
I'm just waiting for Clay Aiken to play "Annie."
ooh julie reiber! i saw her in asu. are you sure broadwayshowfan? i catn find it on brooklynthemusical.info
It's official and true. Tinytoon is just lazy updater. I believe theatre mania has an article.
Amen Wanna Be A Foster! You don't really have to be this amazing actor to pull off the role. You just have to be able to sing the *bleep* out of all the songs. And after seeing Diana sing the *bleep* out of everything she did on AI, I think she will be fine in this role.
She does have a wonderful range.
