I love when I'm in a show and a really powerful song is coming on and you can hear the conductor count off. It just adds another level of intenseness to the song. In RENT for example, before the title song, you can always here the conductor go "2,3,4!!". I've heard this in many other shows too.
Funny enough, I saw the Nutcracker one year, and the conductor did that during one of the songs.

you have a count-off fetish?
not exactly count-off but I like the concept of the pit speaking.
in "City of Angels" they yell HA! at the end of their big finale playoff and for those who have seen "Cry-Baby", I actually thought the spoken lines written into the overture was cute and clever.
my favorite... WATCH YOUR CHOLESTORAL.
^I was about to ask the same question.

Yes. Somebody SpellingBeeFan said he heard a recording of Avenue Q recorded from the front row and he heard the conductor. I asked him how this was possible since the conductor is under the stage.
What happened to SpellingBee's posts?
Were they removed because he mentioned a bootleg?
I love watching the conductor before Omigod You Guys during Legally Blonde. He just looks ready to go and rock out. It's cool.
This is a bad omen. First the hacking, now this.

Well I wouldn't say fetish.. but I find it really awesome to hear it. It just sends the energy up like 6 steps.
CHICAGO has a great one. A 5-6-7-8!
The "GO!" before Angry Inch in Hedwig used to do that to me. Mmm....
In 42nd Street the girls are telling Peggy Sawyer to watch out for the musicians, that's why "they're in the pit, where they belong." In one production I saw, after the laugh subsides, the conductor stands up and looks at the audience sheepishly, cueing another laugh.
omg- Tony, I was in a production of 42nd, and after that line, the orchestra used to boo to it. It was a lot of fun. :)

Oh my God, yes, I didn't think anybody else cared. But I love it when the count off. just like you said, in Rent, it adds a bit more energy.
For some reason, I don't love hearing the count-off in musicals.
This is strange, because I generally do love hearing the wordless count-off done by drummers on rock albums (usually live albums). What is this wordless count-off? Clicking the sticks together. It makes me happy.
Well, I also love the way Frank Zappa would occasionally count off the start of a song "One, one, one, one!"
its not really count offs, but i just love watching Alex Lacamoire conduct.
This is a different counting story, but during the opening number of A Chorus Line, apparently one of the cut dancers is supposed to count out loud. I was always confused as to why the guy was counting until I was sitting close enough to hear "Zach" tell him to stop.
Wow the board DID get shorter!
