Nah, I never said it will be the big hit. I said I LOVED the show in La Jolla, which I did. Not so much on Broadway. But, that is what happens when they take a show that was great out of town and make it okay for Broadway.
If this show is the Grey Gardens of the season, Faith Prince is the Christine Ebersole.
Edit: Let me add that I HIGHLY doubt this show will win Best Musical. It does not appeal to wide enough of a demographic.

LuPone will loose to Prince for one reason (if Prince is as strong as mentioned here):
All things being equal, the Tony Voters prefer somebody who created a role as opposed to recreating it (no matter how much they smashed and redefined it). Heck, all things DON'T need to be equal. Just look at Raul.
No comments on Kritzer or Cavenaugh? And Jenna poses no threat to LuPone, I haven't seen LuPone's Broadway Rose but I did see her at City Center and Russell has nothing on her (and I say this as a non-LuPone fan). Prince may be the only person to make this race interesting.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
i was very young but i remember seeing Faith Prince in Guys/Dolls and she gave by far one of the most memorable performances I have ever seen- funny, amaaazing timing, perfect voice.... just fantastic.
I was told by trusted friends that Faith was the ONLY reason to see this otherwise okay show. Well worth it for her, but the show itself is not that great. Have they done a lot of rewrites? (Sorry, I don't read Harvey's blogs.)
Also, Urban, do you really think Raul lost the Tony simply because he did not create the role of Bobby?
In San Diego, Kritzer and Cavenaugh were solid in underwritten parts. I imagine Kritzer will receive a Tony nod, though, because of her buzz and great potential, much in the way she won the Equity award "for her work in LEGALLY BLONDE".
And everybody, don't worry! Even when there is a clear favorite in a category, there is always a dark horse that starts to get tons of press right before the awards and make a race a little interesting. Even last year, I wasn't completely convinced that the Tony voters wouldn't give Audra her fifth because of her last-minute buzz and other award-wins.
Prince seems to be the dark horse this year, but I wouldn't rule out a love letter to O'Hara from Brantley, knowing his habit of giving pretty leading ladies credit for an entire production.
It would be nice to see Miss Prince have a hit...hell, after BELLS ARE RINGING and LITTLE ME it may even be called a comeback!
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

I just got back from seeing the show and I can not disagree more with the positive responses about the show. I did not like it...nor did the 2 people I saw it with. Just about every song was a ballad....such a slow show!!! Sorry, it just didn't do it for me....at all.
Sketchy? what do mean by sketchy? 3 of us from the UK had tickets for 'Cry Baby' suddenly we had a call from a friend who had spare tickets for the dress of 'ACA' -simple- wouldnt you? We wernt paying for either!! No of us were over excited about seeing 'CB' so we legged it to the Walter Kerr! ! ?
A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!''
Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'
I've just seen Cry Baby... and well I need a really good new musical to erase the memory. I was hoping ACA will be that show, but not if it's "this year's Grey Garden-every song's a ballad". I have no interest in In The Heights, and so far the only one I liked a lot was Xanadu, but I don't think it's Tony worthy. BTW, around 7pm last night there were only 3 musicals listed on tkts: A Catered Affair, Passing Strange, and I forget the other one, and 3 plays. This seems to be a very busy Easter week, lots of families and school groups.
At 7.30 on Tues as we walked towards 'Cry Baby' before our diversion to 'A Catered Affair', we passed TKTS and the only Broadway main show there was Gypsy! 9th row centre! We just had to ask!

Hm... these reactions ("It's booooring!" "Too slow!" "Too many ballads!") only solidify my expectations that A CATERED AFFAIR is probably going to be a richer, more moderately-paced, emotional show that will appeal to much the same audience as LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, and not the crowd that needs everything to have the frenetic A.D.D. energy of, say, LEGALLY BLONDE.
I have seen Faith Prince in three shows...and she always seems bored. I thought it was a choice in Little Me...but she did it in Bells Are Ringing too...and Noises Off.
That said, I hope she, or anyone other than Patti wins the Tony.

What about those who enjoy both types of shows? I liked both Piazza and Blonde for different reasons because they are different types of shows. And it is possible that a show can be slow and dull simply because it actually is slow and dull. Just because it wasn't created as escapist entertainment doesn't mean it is automatically a better show or more artistically sound. That said, was there any indication A Catered Affair would be a flashy high-energy show aimed for a more commercial tourist market? I never got that vibe.
