Due to Aurora's function in the story I think you can cast it withany age really. And perhaps controversially, I don't even think dance is essential to making Spider Woman work. Aurora's star power was portrayed through dance because Chita wasChita. While I would prefer a high kicking Aurora, I wouldn't storm out of the theater if faced with a different interpretation."
I respectfully disagree about the dancing. Aurora, as conceived in Kiss of the Spider Woman, is more than just a fantasy, she’s an embodiment of old-Hollywood allure, crafted deliberately for a bona fide triple threat. Her presence is meant to embody the polish of a classic movie star, which includes not just vocal power and acting depth, but undeniable movement, a command of the stage that only dance can provide. Stripping that element away dilutes the theatrical language the show speaks in.
I think part of the reason this revival has taken so long is because the role demands someone who can carry both the artistic weight and the marquee power to make it resonate. Names like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga have floated around, but those were more dream casting than tangible possibilities. It wasn’t until Ariana DeBose’s Oscar win that people started to sense a revival might actually be within reach. Nicole Scherzinger, in many ways, is an even more natural fit being technically gifted, theatrically savvy, and finally receiving the recognition that aligns with the magnitude of the role.
