"Staunton met with Jerry Herman a couple of months before he died in December 2019. The tunesmith gave permission for Staunton and Cooke to switch around the show’s opening scenes and change one of its songs."

Any guesses as to the changes here?

I would be shocked if it's anything but this.

Bette Midler workshopped and rehearsed that, but she and Rudin ultimately decided to stick with "I Put My Hand In." Which means Herman & his estate had probably already approved the change.

I think "Just Leave..." is a much better song than "Hand" and I think all 3 of those Broadway Dollies could have made a meal of it.

I don't know the show at all - I did see Bette and enjoyed - but the opening was a little ho-hum and not very exciting.

I prefer "Just Leave Everything to Me" to "I Put My Hand In", but when I see the show, "Hand" is always so delightful, and kooky, that it sets up the farce pieces later in the show.

Although, does anyone know what moment in the show "Just Leave Everything to Me" was written for? I know in his memiors, Jerry Herman said he wished Gene Kelly used the song in it's originally intended spot.

I love both songs. I Put My Hand In is so pastiche and campy in a "Nosy Auntie" kinda way, Leave Everything To Me is much more reassuring in a "Maternal" way. I wish they'd find a way to get them both in there lol, but it does represent two very different flavors of Dollies (for ME) when used as an opening number for her.

I think 'I Put My Hand In' is full of charm and a lovely way to open the show. But I think 'Just Leave Everything to Me' is gangbusters. It's such a thrill. (And Streisand's cocaine tempo for 'So Long, Dearie' is just insane and, because of that, the show tempo always lets me down just a little bit.)

As someone who saw the film before he saw the stage version, Barbra's "So Long Dearie" tempo has set me up for failure for any future Dolly. I understand Herman's intention, but I mean it just so slow lol

I find it interesting that Imelda Staunton will play The Queen in THE CROWN soon. Given the Queen's recent death, the show will probably be even bigger now and it's already big. If all goes well she could literally be the biggest celebrity in the UK for a brief amount of time, making HELLO, DOLLY! the biggest event in the West End. I'm sure I'll be annoyed that it's going to be the third time she does worse than Bernadette in a role and seems to win all the praise and hype (two previous being Gypsy and ESPECIALLY Follies - god people said Bernadette didn't have the voice LOL). I can only imagine her 'Parade Passes By' will be the complete OPPOSITE of Berandette's vulnerable take. But it is kind of cool and exciting. I can't wait!

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.
