That's the precise reason why XANADU will make it.
Ditto CURTAINS.

It was a cute show that always left you feeling happy and in a good mood.
I will miss it
When you say history, the test that comes to mind is "Will it be revived and accepted again." (I'm thinking of the New York City Center Encore! performances and the like). With that said:
Asides from the Tonys, I don't think SA will be remembered. I've always thought it was a gimmicky show, and now that we've all oogled the trick, it's not likely to work anywhere close to as well again.
Legally Blonde... heck no. Heck no heck no.
Even as much as I love In the Heights, I don't think it will survive without Lin for very long, and I doubt it'll come back. But hopefully I'm wrong and we get some other prodigy to take Mr. Miranda's place...
All shows will be remembered thanks to the internet, cast recordings (which LB cast recording was huge) and with Legally Blonde its MTV broadcast which will eventually pop up on DVD
I honestly don't think "being a good show" is criterion enough to make something historically significant. Not even when it's "being a good show despite everyone expecting to to be terrible". sadm2 does make the excellent point that no show in this age of technology can truly be forgotten, but... in 200 years when someone's writing a potted history of Broadway, my ancestors/reincarnation will be VERY surprised if 'Xanadu' - most notable for Drama Desk for Best Book, putting Cheyenne Jackson in short shorts, and not sucking - makes it in there.
To be fair, one could argue that Legally Blonde will be remembered far more than the revival of Gypsy.
LB tapped into the audience MTV had already rounded up into one place, granted that audience isn't a typical Theatre goer and their like for a show isn't going to keep it in BROADWAY history...but since it crossed over into mainstream it won't be forgotten as quickly as people here have claimed.
Spring Awakening won't fade away too easily, but I agree that it didn't exactly make much of an impact.
In The Heights is an awesome show, but likewise - it hasn't made a huge impact. That might change, however, if they did make a film down the line.
To be fair, one could argue that Legally Blonde will be remembered far more than the revival of Gypsy.

You say that, but you give no argument why it will be remembered over GYPSY.
Agreed. A revival of the best musical ever starring an all star cast of TONY winners, has NOTHING on Legally Blonde.
You say that, but you give no argument why it will be remembered over GYPSY.
'Legally Blonde' gets the "broadcast on MTV!" footnote. 'Gypsy' sinks into the "omg not another 'Gypsy' revival!" abyss.
Try harder. :P
EDIT: also he DID explain why 'Legally Blonde' stands a good chance of being remembered! Does your reading comprehension only stretch to one sentence per post or something?

I saw Legally Blonde last night (I waited on line in the morning with about seventy 14 year old girls wearing pink for student tickets) and I couldn't help but think "Why am I here?".... but I stuck it out because I heard that its surprisingly good, and some comparisons to Hairspray (which I think is a cute, fun musical). So, I wanted to know for myself before it closes.
I was surprised. Very cute and fun. I went with my mom and she said "Well, this is a show I didn't think I would be going to" before the show, but after the show she said "I really liked that" and even bought the cd. So- tada! It won us over. I like Legally Blonde and I can admit it.
When I first heard about "Legally Blonde" I was thinking "Wow...what is Broadway coming to?"
But then I saw part of the mtv broadcast, and bought the soundtrack.
Now its one of only two shows that I've seen more than once...and one of my favorites!
It may not be original...or have any real meaning to it...but it's fun and bubbly (and pink...very pink) and I will remember it, even if no one else does.

I found out I was being dragged to it in July 2007 and was dreading it, then I heard some reviews and felt a little better then I saw it and fell in love...
next week will be my fifth time seeing it! It became one of my favorite shows.
Of the musicals that have opened in the past 2 years, Grey Gardens will make history books. Maybe Curtains. Nothing else.

I completely agree. I saw the show last week and I loved it, it was so much better than I was expecting. The singing and dancing was amazing! I couldn't believe how well trained the two dogs in the show were! It makes me sad that I won't get to see it again, and I really wish I had thought to see it earlier.
I am seeing it on friday!!!
Does anyone know if anything special is happening during the final performance?
I'll miss it because it's one show you can go to and just easily enjoy it. You get to escape into a happier show as opposed to some other shows that are heavy. It was fun an clever.

I'm actually a little scared Lin-Manuel will pull a Topol and be playing Usnavi to his grave.
"In" may be a "peice" of Broadway history in a week- till then it's just a "Peice" of....
I enjoy the music and I have watched the MTV broadcast several times. A fun musical.
60 year old Lin trying to hook up with a 25 year old Vanessa gives me enjoyment.
A piece of Broadway History? Of course. A big piece? Probably not.
I caught a performance of the tour yesterday, and didn't expect too much. I'm not usually one to like modern musicals, especially teen themed shows, but I was very, very surprised. I had myself a great evening and loved the show. It had a heart, and was fun and energetic. It wasn't very intellectual, but it didn't need to be. The show carried what it set out to do. It made those in the theatre forget their troubles for two hours. I enjoyed the score much more live, and gained a love for this show.
It doesn't contain the most revolutionary score or plot, but it has a heart. It was fast paced, cute, and lovable.
It was a great show, and though I never thought I'd say this, it is much better than most of the shows on broadway now.
I wish the cast and crew the best of luck!
Note: Lin-Manuel has already announced his departure. Mid-Feb, if I remember correctly. (Doesn't mean he wont' be back, though!)

I actually agree with toanythingtaboo. How many Gypsy revivals have there been? 3? Legally Blonde was quite tastefully done in its conversion from screen to stage, and even if it might be low on any "intellectual content", one has to applaud the stage transitions, costumes, dance choreography, which I have to admit was really quite remarkable. Don't take the piss out of it just because MTV filmed it, there was a reality show based on it etc.
I know it's a Disneyesque show but hey, Sondheim isn't everything, k thanks. Don't understand why people must feel compelled to slam popular musicals and lament on the dermise on true Broadway musicals. Like it matters.
Ps: Accidental spelling errors do mean one is uneducated and unfit to be taken seriously. Jesus.
It happens to all shows. It had a decent run. I would have thought it would hold on until January & than close. Very enjoyable & a fun show.
I can I just say that Hairspray barely got even a blip of air time on "Broadway: The American Musical", I doubt Legally Blonde would have gotten ANY had it been around when the documentary was made.
