How do we cope with this?

In the next 10-15 years we will likely lose Liza, Patti, Betty Buckley and Bernadette

Joking aside, we'll relish our memories of their performances, savor their recordings, and celebrate their accomplishments -- and look forward to the next generation of awesome leading ladies. This has happened before, and will happen again -- we will enjoy the time we have had with them.

I imagine they are quite aware of their own mortality.

Yes. We live in the real world not some fantasy world where apparently the next thing we have to do is pretend we aren't human? There is a very warming quote from Liza's new book that demonstrates she is aware of her own mortality.

"It's been a lifetime of high notes and low notes, baby. And I want you to know, with more days behind me than ahead, it’s been a life very well lived. I have no regrets. None. The only thing I’m truly sorry about is the pain of anyone I’ve ever hurt. However accidentally, or thoughtlessly. To all of you, I am truly sorry.”

Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!
Liza Minnelli

And let's not forget about Barbra- who is gonna be 84 in April--- and many of us, too---but this is the cycle of life---we are born-- we live-- we leave--- and that is the way it has been created--- as we all know. Whether or not AI will keep the brain functioning after death is something that might be coming.

They will all have lived long lives of unbelievable accomplishment and left behind an incredible legacy that will still be able to be enjoyed for generations to come, which is far more than can be said for the vast majority of people who have ever died in the history of humanity.

That doesn't mean random people have to rub it in their face at random times (or even discuss it behind their backs). When they bring it up themselves, it's ok, of course.

Did your parents teach you anything? And what weirdo has nothing better to do than come up with such an idea for a thread out of the blue - and then actually start it?

Let's deal with this properly when it has actually happened. Not a decade or three before just because binau is having a philosophical day or something.

Come on.  No one is rubbing it in their faces.  It is one post on one discussion board.

It is not as if someone went up to one of them at the stage door and said, "Gosh, you're knocking on death's door.  Can you sign my Playbill?"

Some Broadway stars like LMM have even been known to POST here. And some of their friends, relatives, coworkers, agents etc. are almost certain to look around here from time to time. Given that this thread is about as essential as neurodermitis we can bury it without sacrificing anything. So spare me the "Come on".

Some of you really are insufferable, can you please just ignore or block me? I mean I'm happy to continue the fighting if this is how you want to do it though.

We've been going through this with you a few times a year for years now. You come on here with melodramatic handwringing about Bernadette Peters while on other threads going off on tangents the theme of which is always "everybody is irrational but me," coupled with a compulsive need to always have the last word, then you either disappear, settle down, or make a big show of leaving the board forever for real this time.

I don't think you're a troll but I do think you need to seriously re-assess why you're on this board in the first place because this pattern of behavior is not healthy.

Ok, so are you saying this thread is inappropriate Kad?

Genuinely, maybe I agree with you about questioning the reasons why I am here. Like maybe clearly you're just 'not my people'. If I can't expect that a discussion board can handle a conversation about the mortality of our greats, what am I doing? It's madness.

This place has declined so much in 20 years. Or maybe I have. But I can barely stand you anymore, clearly. And I don't think you can stand me either.

You are truly a staggering achievement in the field of lack of self-awareness.

Binau — I say this with love, but posts like this make me think it might be worth reflecting on what personal fears or concerns about mortality they’re tapping into for you.

To answer your question, though: great artists come and go, and new artists always emerge behind them. Those newer artists may never replace the older ones for you—but that’s often because the artists you grew up with become intertwined with the memories, moments, and experiences of particular times in your life.

The answer is always to just enjoy life and the people in it as they are right now

Not to speak for Kad, but it seems like the majority of us think you’re just insufferable. This thread isn’t “inappropriate” it’s just … f*cking weird on a lot of levels.
