Into the Woods "To Be Continued..."?

Nothing in Minnesota... a little disappointing, but not surprising because the Guthrie has their own production of Into the Woods opening in June.

A pretty quick turn around for SJB, the production of Sunset Blvd closes on the 8th and ITW previews/tech performances start on the 18th

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Isn't something going into the St. James? Even if another theater opened up, I don't think they'll do another extension

New York, New York is set to open at the St. James in the spring.

What Into the Woods is doing is how shows used to tour in the old days, bringing most of the gang back together.

Oh look, a bibu!

It is interesting that there is a month long gap between the Chicago and San Francisco stops. If the hadestown rumors are true that they plan on closing this spring/March I can definitely see Jordan Roth bringing this back for a limited engagement at the Walter Kerr for the awards season.

I can easily imagine that.

Five days in San Francisco? I can’t recall any touring show staying in San Francisco for basically a week. Tickets will be tough to come by (and probably pretty expensive). The LA stop is a lot longer.

Yeah, I was surprised to see that I'm from The Bay and usually big shows on their first tours come for at least a month. I really would've expected that from this one. The Curran will definitely be packed for those shows.

As far as that big late spring gap, I definitely think we could see a return engagement somewhere on Broadway. I thought the Hadestown rumors were that it would close around labor day.

If I'm Jordan Roth and want my show back on broadway for a month to try to get Tonys, I think the financial calculation changes and it would become worth renting someone else's theatre for that month. It's perfectly timed to swoop in and scoop up the house of a Shubert spring flop or maybe the Shuberts don't even end up filling all of their houses!

Isn’t it more likely that they just add more cities on the tour for these gaps? I’m sure lining up this tour so quickly has been challenging since most of these subscription houses are booked far in advance. Plus, a short notice add-on show like this would probably have to be sold outside of a regular subscription package so maybe for now only the bigger city solid markets have been announced.

Yes — and probably tour stops without Block, Arcelus, and Creel. Maybe Montego does it, but I cannot see those folks doing any kind of lengthy tour. For now easier to just announce the tour stops that will feature them, since that was the narrative of the release.

ITW’s time on Broadway seems to have run its course. It was never able to attract a major name after Bareilles.

I’m sure scheduling would be difficult in many cities, but not at the Curran in San Francisco, which has basically been empty since the Harry Potter play closed in September. There’s a reason the Curran is getting a week but no more. I just don’t know what it is. It’s not because of a perceived lack of demand. Major tours are almost always in SF for at least four weeks and the shows I’ve seen recently appear to be selling well. (Moulin Rouge! played for nine weeks.) If San Francisco was skipped entirely for some reason, that would be one thing. One week is just odd. It feels like they wanted to skip San Francisco but someone called in a favor. I have no idea, just speculating at random.

I can certainly see some of the gaps in the schedule filled as there's still some time left to add this to some theaters.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Only Los Angeles and D.C are staying for a bit longer, the rest of the dates are about 5-7 days. I wouldn’t think too much of it. Short tour with short stops.

Did MR sell well in SF? I know it played its entire stop, but it also did for LA and we know that didn’t sell that great.

I'm surprised Cleveland isn't one of the cities. The subscription series has 3-week runs, and the recent "Waitress" mini-tour played in one of its smaller houses. There definitely would have been a demand for this tour.

They need a filler in between Chicago and San Francisco. That's five weeks off. Can definitely see one or two cities added in between those.

Maybe the month off is to accommodate someone’s schedule? I wouldn’t take the short stops as anything meaningful. It seems like that’s just the appeal of the tour for the names attached. Short stints, major cities.

I do wonder if part of it is trying to capture what made the original 8 weeks so incredibly successful but on an even smaller scale.

Obviously Sara B was a HUGE draw, but I also think that the nature of it feeling like an extremely limited event made people go out to see it. You had to be in the room, tickets were going fast, and the clock was counting down until it was gone.

If a month or two is enough for everyone who wants to see a tour in San Francisco to see it leisurely without much difficulty getting tickets, then maybe 5 days (I assume that's 6 or 7 shows) is the right amount of time to create that event nature and make it a hot ticket.

That’s true. But as it’s Into the Woods, with a Broadway cast on tour, it would be an event for two weeks, or three. There’s a reason it is only one week in San Francisco. I just don’t know what it is.

Probably the exact same reason the majority of the stops are a week or less.

It's likely just because this whole tour came together very last minute and the space in San Francisco is only available that long. DC is playing for 30 performances in the Opera House which seats 2500+ people. That's insane wishful thinking on the part of the Kennedy Center and the producers. That's going to be a long and pretty empty start for the tour.

Has anyone heard anything about Hear Lies Love having any Broadway future? I haven't heard anything-I think it's "gone cold".

There was this article that came out a few days ago, but it doesn’t seem official at all. Also Conrad was hinting at something that was a part of was going to play the Broadway Theatre a week or so ago.
