I like the idea of James Corden as the Baker.

It's the most licensed and produced in the world of all Sondheim musicals (music and lyrics).
Yeah, a lot of people might not know it's Sondheim (or really know what "Sondheim" means) but Into the Woods is an immensely popular show.

Imagine everyone's shock when they see how it ends, since so many people only see that awful "Junior" version.

I'm still surprised that this is actually happening, as I don't recall Disney ever mentioning it as part of their release schedule, and Disney releases very few live-action non-franchise pictures anymore.

Funny about the "Junior" version. My niece was in the "Junior" version in her High School production. When I gave her the CD to see the original B'way production, my sister was aghast at the subject material. Then, they got the script and were "happy" when they stopped it at the end of the first act. I was aghast.
As for the movie, I see the Witch role as more acting than singing part. I am not a singer or an actor, but I just don't see that part as being terribly difficult to sing for someone with some sort of voice training. Although, I would not take Zeta-Jones just because of her beauty. I think the ugly makeup can make anyone look beautiful after the transformation (and Streep aint no ugly duckling to begin with).

My brother left after Act 1 of the Broadway production because he thought it was over.
________
Didn't the original script of the film (the first time around) have a happier ending? I hope they stick with the "life does not always have a fairy tale ending" of the original in this new film version.

Didn't your brother think it was weird that nobody else left?

Corden is in talks for Baker - Depp will be the Wolf, according to a very reliable film journalist. Very surprising, great news! Who knew Marshall could restrain his starf*cking tendencies?

I'm assuming that he went with that rush of people who went out to get some air (or smoke) during intermission and with the crowds in the street, he must have kept going. I asked him if he saw the giant and he said "what giant?"
-----------
I like the idea of Depp as the wolf. It also sounds like the type of role he would go for. I just hope they don't expand the role too much because it's Depp playing it.

Did he go alone? Does he not open his program at all at a show? This confounds me. Did he think the "to be continued" at the end of act one was promising a sequel at a later date?

If they were going to cast a star as the wolf, I would have much preferred The Rock.

I've pointed this out before, but I'm almost certain Disney will not "Disneyfy" this one too much- it's clearly targeted towards an older audience and not going to be a "kid's show." Consider the success, style and tone of "Once Upon A Time" on ABC as almost a test run to see if this would work.

"Depp is not carrying this movie, the part is quite small, but his participation was key in it getting a greenlight."

The Wolf would be a better part for Depp's schedule because he has other projects in development right now.

Does this mean we still have a chance at Nina Arianda for the Baker's Wife?!

No, if anything it means her chances are even worse.

Oh well. This would be wonderful for James and Nina already has other projects she's working on but it would be fantastic to see what she could do with this role.

Wow, if any of this is true (and there's so much speculation on this thread, which is half the fun anyway) about Corden and Depp, and if it indeed happens, it'd be a huge sign that Marshall is in the right mindset. Corden would be ideal as the Baker, I wonder what the rest of the cast will look like, hopefully he won't get lost or look out of place if surrounded by a bunch of movie stars. But he seems so right for the part and I'm with everyone who thinks Depp would make a great Wolf. I'd be so excited with a Corden, Streep, Depp trio in those specific roles.
I love Arianda and think she'd make a fantastic Baker's Wife, but there are a number of actresses who'd be right for the role, whereas I thought casting the Baker would prove incredibly difficult. They seriously need to announce this already, I'm too excited about the whole thing to wait any longer.

Corden is fantastic as the seriocomic straight man surrounded by surreal supernatural goings-on on Doctor Who, so I think he would make a fantastic Baker.

If they are after James Corden for the Baker maybe Sheridan Smith could be up for the wife? They have chemistry together and she not that long ago hinted at a musical movie role that had yet to be announced

I'll repeat my choices for the Baker's Wife: Nicole Parker or Martha Plimpton.

I realize it's part of his charm, but can James Corden drop or at least tone down his heavy East End accent? I've watched a few interviews and as much as I'm a BBC junkie, he borders on unintelligible sometimes.
And if I have trouble with it, "the Average Joes" in the U.S. are going to be really put off.
I probably wouldn't want him to lose it, but if he could "Deppifiy" his accent (the Americanized version of Cockney), it would help a whole lot.
Just wondering.

Jackie Evancho would be lovely as Little Red. Does anyone know if she can act?
Is there any chance that Bernadette could make a cameo? Pherhaps as Jack's or even Cinderella's mom.

Sheridan Smith and Megan Hilty would be great as the stepsisters. Supposedly the Baker's Wife is a bankable A-lister, though I only "know" that rumor from one of the many threads on this board so who knows? Though if Corner is actually playing the Baker, I once again, cannot imagine Reese Witherspoon having any kind of chemistry with him.
