Bare bones but brilliant. It allowed for seamless transitions from the view of front of the stage to the wings to the backstage. Maybe there is a director out there who could work with a set designer to come up with a different concept that would work equally as well, but that is just one of major challenges of doing a revival of Dreamgirls.  Btw, a few names that have been cited— White, Cruz and Stone would, imho, be much better choices.

Because Black women are not capable of directing and choreographing their own stories?! Sounds about white. 

I bet Tommy Tune's vision for staging this would be brilliant!

Lord. A non-Catholic can effectively direct The Sound of Music. A gentile can effectively direct Fiddler on the Roof. And a white man can--and did, quite effectively--direct Dreamgirls. Heck, it was a team of white men who created all the material and shaped the piece into what it is.

Tommy Tune was Bennett's protégé, and works in a similar vein of creating the sort of fantastic stage pictures and rapid, cinematic movement that Bennett devised. It's easy to see why someone would think of Tune for this, and do so without thinking "We've got to get a white guy because there's no possible way a Black person could do this."

A lot of good names have been suggested to helm this. Tune is just one more. It could be directed by a Black woman, a Black man, an Asian of whatever sex, a white person of either gender. The question is talent. It's always talent. And because I know how ridiculous this board can be, let me be clear that I know there are as many talented people of color who could helm this.

The users you quote were responding to the comment Fred Mason said which was "Jerry Mitchell is the only one who should direct and choreograph this." Which is a statement that only a white man should direct this. This board wasn't being "ridiculous" in calling that out.

You are right. I was wrong. Went back over the thread. I confused two posts in my head. Apologies. 

I just refuse to believe that they can’t find the right age-appropriate actresses for this. The girls are busting out of the seams with talent. 

Obviously there’s a lot going on with the creative and producing of this show, but I don’t think this is just a casting thing. 
 

My general feeling is (especially after The Wiz), if they can’t figure out how to do this the right way, they need to just not do it. I’d rather have no production than a lackluster one.

I dunno. It was nice having a Boys in the Band produced, directed and starring all gay men. I imagine having a black director for Dreamgirls would be pretty cool too."

Not sure what point you think you're making, as nothing in my post suggests having a Black director helm the project would be a bad thing.
