Is Kiss Me, Kate the only musical revival set for the spring?

As of now (unless I missed something this past week) it is currently the only confirmed musical revival for this season. It's still possible for some of the other ones that have been rumored or in development to still happen (Crazy for You, Dreamgirls, Secret Garden), of course, but none of them seem to be moving along very quickly at this point.

Just judging by what I know, KMK will be the only musical revival this spring. I don't believe any others are set come in, especially given theatre availability.

I feel like we would have heard something by now, plus with all these plays being announced like every other day, theatres are running out. Mabye next season will be the year of the musicals.

Someone in another thread mentioned the possibility of a transfer of the West End production of Company to the Walter Kerr in the Spring if its well received.

They would never lump in a musical with the plays. They split the revival categories decades ago.

I think they wouldn’t actually give out the award because there is no competitor. Didn’t they not give out Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical In 1985 for a lack of viable nominees?

With Nicholaw working on "The Prom," I don't think there would be time to rush that in by the end of the spring. I honestly think it would do decently if it opened up during the summer, but who knows.

According to the current rules they would indeed do a single Revival category if there are not enough revivals in each to warrant the award.

(h) Revivals. Each year the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall determine whether there shall exist in quality and quantity a sufficient number of Revivals to merit the granting of an Award for Best Revival of a Play or Musical and, if so, the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall also determine whether there shall be a separate Play and Musical Revival category

Secret Garden DID announce itself for this season, but the details were scarce and there's been virtually no followup so it's doubtful it will come to fruition. Though that being said, when Head Over Heels does finally shutter (sorry, all), I can't imagine the Hudson will sit vacant for too long.

That could be an exciting addition to this season! Would it extend in London through the spring, though? That's a really short run -- about 13 weeks. Even most straight plays in the U.S. play 15-20 weeks.

Jujamcyn was listed as one of the co-producers of the London production, so the Kerr would seem likely.

Not necessarily. From the Tony Award Rules and Regulations:

"Each year the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall determine whether there shall exist in quality and quantity a sufficient number of Revivals to merit the granting of an Award for Best Revival of a Play or Musical and, if so, the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall also determine whether there shall be a separate Play and Musical Revival category [emphasis mine]; provided, however, that if there are at least three such plays and three such musicals, there shall automatically be separate Play and Musical Revival categories."  

If there's only one musical revival, I can see a general "Best Revival" category being a possibility, rather than only having a "Best Revival of a Play" category.

Well damn, I didn’t know that.

It almost seems a bit unfair though, since the musicals have so many more moving parts and could easily outshine any plays that are in the category.

I don’t know about you guys, but if I was a producer and had plans for a revival I would try my best to get it in this season with virtually zero competition.

Fair point, but there is no chance KMK will win the single Best Revival award this year. Torch Song kinda has it in the bag.

It depends. I mean look at last year. What do you think would have won between Once on This Island and Angels in America?

Not necessarily. The single Revival category could also mean that Kiss Me, Kate doesn't get nominated. We don't know anything about this production yet, but we do know it's an old, problematic musical with a great score that had an exquisite revival less than 20 years ago that people still remember. And it stars a pair of leading actors who –– on paper –– seem somewhat miscast.

And look at the competition: King Lear, All My Sons, Torch Song, The Waverly Gallery, The Boys in the Band, Straight White Men, True West, Burn This, maybe even a few others.
