Not necessarily. The single Revival category could also mean thatKiss Me, Katedoesn't get nominated. We don't know anything about this production yet, but we doknow it's an old, problematic musical with a great score that had an exquisite revival less than 20 years ago that people still remember. And it starsa pair of leading actors who –– on paper –– seem somewhat miscast.
And look at the competition:King Lear, All My Sons, Torch Song, The Waverly Gallery, The Boys in the Band,Straight White Men, True West, Burn This, maybe even a few others."
Would The boys in the band be forgotten come Tony time?
Will Straight White Men be considered a revival? It doesn't really fit into the classics rule and it was reworked for the Broadway run.

All depends on how the other revivals turn out this season!
Will Choir Boy be considered new?
With only one revival musical currently, I'm shocked that you are not seeing one of the others that have been sort of in the wings for awhile (Dreamgirls, Crazy For You, etc) jumping at the chance. They might not WIN revival against Kate however it would be almost a sure thing for a nomination and a Tony Awards performance for publicity at this point. Perhaps we will see something swoop in in the spring, anticipating the usual post holidays, New Years wave of closings for a theatre to open.
Straight White Men will be considered a new play.

Angels in America, no doubt in my mind. Angels was one of the most miraculous things I've seen on a stage.

Exactly my point.
I didn't realize Straight White Men (2014 at the Public) and Choir Boy (2013 at MTC Stage 2) were so recent, my apologies! I feel like both those decisions are going to be in the hands of the Tony administration committee. It'll also be interesting if 2nd Stage / MTC petition the plays to be considered a certain way.
Straight White Men had a different cast and director than the 2014 production, which was directed by the playwright, and 2nd Stage already has one good revival contender (Torch Song). Choir Boy has the same director and some of the same actors from the Off-Bway production, but MTC will have a new play running at Tony time (Ink) that could profit from the awards-exposure.
Paging Michael Riedel: keep tabs on these shows!
Forgive me if its been said already, but to be nominated for a revival does a play or musical have to be a certain number of years old?
As an example, lets say a brand new production of To Kill a mockingbird opens next season, would that be considered a revival since its so soon to the orignal production?

It's been discussed at length on here, but the belief is that both those shows are unable to come in this season because of scheduling and the limited availability of large theatres. And for Crazy For You, Susan Stroman has Marie previewing in Seattle in late March/starting NYC rehearsals in early February. So Crazy For You would have to be "frozen" by early February at the very latest.

With Nicholaw working on "The Prom," I don't think there would be time to rush that in by the end of the spring. I honestly think it would do decently if it opened up during the summer, but who knows."
Heard from a friend of a friend of Casey's that he's focusing on Dreamgirls after Prom is up so I guess anything is still possible for the it opening before the end of this season-spring' 19. Also, had heard that Producer Sonia Friedman had wanted the Hudson for Dreamgirls so that could happen after Head over Heels closes!

See page 8-9 for the (somewhat vague) rules: https://www.tonyawards.com/pdf/2018_Tony_Rules.pdf

ANGELS by a mile - no competition. M. Elliott would have won Director in this scenario as well.

I thought Merrily We Roll Along was also going to be in the spring, but no tickets have been sold to the general public. Anyone has any idea?

I think I also saw Jim Parsons say in an interview during the run that they were happy to be doing the play in the summertime “away from the pressure of critics and awards”, so I don’t think the production was focused on being Tony bait, at least from the actors’ standpoint. It also recouped, so that already makes it a winner in its own right

What’re you saying, Sondheimite? Checkers?
It is interesting that no one is bringing in a revival. You'd think some of these producers would see the hole, but alas, it seems a pretty dead season for musicals in general. Which is odd.

Looks like the Tonys for plays are going to be a nightmare this year, especially if you need to verify that you’ve seen every nomlnee in a category in order to vote in that category. The nominating committee has it’s work cut out for it.

Seems like we're overdue for another Les Miz revival.
Or we could revive PATTI LUPONE GYPSY with Patti LaBelle as Patti LuPone!
I think its time for the revival of PATTI LUPONE GYPSY with Loretta Swit
