Oh, madbrian. You have made me so annoyed I didn't think of that.

thank god it fell through. that telecast was hard to get through.
I think Jane could totally do it, but maybe in about 10 years (she looks way too good for it right now). Idina could maybe do it. I'm sad Lillias White hasn't played it (or has she and I missed it?) I think she'd be spectacular.

They should just switch LuPone and Benanti's roles next. Can you imagine Patti bleeting to the poor little lamb?

I actually do think Idina is pretty much ready for it. It would give her a shot at proving herself in a non contemporary role, though she usually prefers new works. It would sell pretty well too.

the thing of it is, no matter what their age, I kind of prefer a Rose who looks a little over the hill. one where when she says "I was born too soon and started too late" you can't think "well look at you, you look great, go be a star while you still can!" Patti was the perfect age for it. Jane and Idina look too good to play it until a decade from now.

I'd like to see what Ebersole's take on the role would be.

I totally understand that sentiment, and it has its advantages to have an "over the hill" Rose. I do believe in terms of the time frame in the actual story, Rose would have only been in her late 30's. The real Rose had Louise at 21 years old.

And honestly, no matter who wants to do it on Broadway for the next decade, they should say no. A revival is supposed to be special, not just because out of towners have never seen it done professionally. Do it anywhere else... LA/DC but producers have saturated the material on Broadway. I don't think they should bring Imelda in from London...producers should let this material breathe and focus on trying to find a another show that could be considered a classic like gypsy in the next 50 years

Did anybody ever see the Angela Lansbury revival from the 70s. I hear that was amazing.

well let's not get caught up in things like facts and figures! I guess in the 1920's or whatever it was probably much harder to be successful in showbiz as you got into your 30's or 40's than it is now.

I have seen Sutton do Rose's Turn live, and trust me - she'd fit this role like a glove. She's perfect. I would too rather just wait for like a decade though. As for Benanti - she'd act the hell out of this part, but the score is not written for a soprano voice.
I'm sure Idina and Kristen would do it great justice too, and sell the heck of box office, but no... I want to see Sutton do this.

Doing a song justice in a concert setting is not the same as being perfectly suited for a role. Foster shocked us all with her Reno Sweeney, so I wouldn't say she doesn't have it in her but she's definitely someone I think should wait 10 years.
Donna Murphy has got to play the role. I just think she'd turn in a Rose for the ages. And I'm glad others agree re Krakowski, she's the most unlike the people who tend to be suggested in these threads but her Rose would be sexy, delusional, hilarious, and indomitable, all qualities that I'd love to see someone bring to the table in a revival of the show. She also is a Broadway baby, so I'd love to see her draw on that experience in a juicy role like this one.

I have no problem with revivals of Gypsy every 7-8 years when the right actress is able to play it.
Look at it this way, since 1959 Gypsy has played 2,287 performances on Broadway including previews. Compare that to: Phantom - 11,797 performances, Chicago - 8,118 performances, The Lion King - 7,731 performances, Wicked - 5,249 performances, Jersey Boys - 4,380 performances.
And that's just for currently running productions. There's always room on Broadway for a great actress to play Gypsy.

1) The idea of Jane Krakowski as Rose is amazingly brilliant.
2) I feel like one reason Rose should be cast with a woman older than the historic Rose Hovick would've been at points in the story is that a younger Rose would call for a younger June and Louise. Louise was already so young when she became Gypsy Rose Lee, but an actress in her early 20s would read VERY young.

I'd love to see Carolee Carmello or Mary Testa (even though they probably would never cast her) in the role

I think though, that Lesli Margherita would make a FANTASTIC Mazeppa!

I'm not allowed to die until I see Donna Murphy play Rose.
I, too, love the idea of Jane Krakowski and Carolee Carmello. I'm gonna throw Marin Mazzie in there too.

Mary Testa's Rose would be ferocious and probably quite moving- I would love to see her tackle it. I also love the Krakowski suggestion- she's out of the box casting but a great actress and she'd sing the score so well.
I adore Donna Murphy, but I don't know if I want to hear her sing Rose. She would act the hell out of the role though.
