I know, just what we need another thread on January closings! Here's my comprehensive list:
Broadway Closings:
*Oleanna
*White Christmas
*Superior Donuts
*Bye Bye Birdie
*Ragtime (as per Reidel)
*The 39 Steps (may transfer to NWS)
*Shrek
Off-Broadway Closings:
*Altar Boyz
*The Toxic Avenger
*Groovaloo
*The Marvelous Wonderettes
*Wintuk
Am I missing anything? Do you guys think Finian's Rainbow will be added to this list before it's all said and done?

"You left me lists.
Everything in lists!
Well, your little lists
Aren't very helpful,
I fear!"

Posted: 12/5/09 at 9:58amIt's so stupid to put limited runs on these lists in order to make the situation seem worse. About a third of the shows on your list were scheduled to close anyway.

Regardless, they are still closing. When eight shows all close on the same day, it still feels sad, whether they were scheduled to close then or not.
I think it's stupid not to include limited runs.
Last year, nine Broadway shows closed on January 3rd. Four were limited runs. One was actually a limited run that had extended to that date. Two of the shows that closed a week or two later were limited runs.
But did people say, "Oh, it's not so bad, it's really only five shows that weren't limited runs"? No, everyone (at least here) was freaking out because OMGNINESHOWSCLOSINGHELPBROADWAYISDEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted: 12/5/09 at 10:33amWell, I think he should at least acknowledge that. It's not brdwybound I'm lashing out at, it's the people who post "BROADWAYISDYING" threads that are half limited runs. I probably shouldn't have brought up my issue in this thread, but it was the first one I saw.

Its a shame so many classic shows with gorgeous music close quickly.. To answer your question I don't think Finian's will close anytime soon. Its' doing well, the music is great and the other show closings should help it. Plus they are getting such great press with the Terri White amazing story! Here is the link if you haven't seen it!

I had no idea 39 Steps was thinking of a transfer to New World Stages. It is hands down the funniest evening I've spent in the theatre in a long, long time.
I'm in the same boat with Piragua. I think putting the limited runs in there is an attempt to make the situation seem worse than it actually is. The media ran with it last year making the limited runs looks like failures.
And I can't imagine Finian's, with that cast size and those grosses, is breaking even each week. I have tickets for the first week of January so am selfishly hoping it holds on until then. Looks like Ragtime will already be off my list. Don't want to lose 2 shows. Though maybe Finian's has a small advance to live off of. I do recall them telling the Times that while their Thanksgiving week was slow, they have plenty of seats booked for the Christmas/New Years weeks.

About a third of the shows on your list were scheduled to close anyway.
The only two on the original poster's list that were limited runs were White Christmas and Wintuk, so I don't know what "third" you're talking about.
EDIT: I somehow forgot to mention Groovaloo, but yes that's limited too.

>I do recall them telling the Times that while their Thanksgiving week was slow, they have plenty of seats booked for the Christmas/New Years weeks.<
Well every show generally has seats booked for Christmas/New Year's weeks. It's what happens the week after January 3 when most shows fall off a cliff.
#23re: January 2010 closings!!!
Posted: 12/5/09 at 4:32pmI think my response was more aimed at the implication it would close on January 3rd which I think is doubtful.

bjh - Groovaloo and Birdie are also limited runs.
BIRDIE was originally limited, but then they announced a longer run and were selling tickets through April. Even if the actual closing date is later than the original closing date, once you extend and then un-extend, it counts.
