There was a lot of talk about Adrien Brody winning, so I don’t think Lithgow is giving this performance for the ages that some here describe because he wasn’t even a lock in London."
I think it's safe to call him an early favorite, but this early on he's probably not a lock. He's arguably got greater competition here - Mark Strong, Don Cheadle, Namir Smallwood, the Dog Day Afternoon boys - and there's a chance the subject matter doesn't play as well to American audiences as it did for Brits.

Oh for sure. And roald Dahl means significantly less over here than over there.
The above comments prove my point: Brody lost to him and so did Strong. We'll see about the others.
But y'all need to understand: this is a Jerusalem-level performance, as is the play.

Yea I didn’t even see it in London and as far as I’m concerned Lith is winning Best Actor until something else actually opens and presents a formidable challenge. This is Mirren in The Audience, or Jodie Comer in Prima Facie, or Cranston in Network, or the aforementioned Jerusalem.
And while Dahl might not be quite as beloved here, he’s pretty darn beloved. And Lithgow is personally beloved by almost everyone who works with him. And the subject matter feels like catnip to frequent New York playgoers who are willing to pay $100+ for something they hear is great.

Scott Rudin is still on track this spring with Nathan Lane in Joe Mantello directed Death of a Salesman and also Bruce Norris’ Cottonfield. Not sure if there’s a leading man in the latter. But I’d argue, Lithgow will be one of the many options this season, but far from a front runner. Nathan Lane will be unstoppable!!!

And this is kind of what makes the play great. I have no real love or knowledge of Dahl, except for the original Wonka movie (Mexican-American here, clearly not a Brit), but I was enthralled from beginning to end! I suspect if you read his books…one of which is discussed at certain length in the play…you’d actually enjoy it more.

I love me some Nathan Lane, but this seems a bit premature for a production that has yet to occur and a performance yet to be seen. So for the time being, given what we know about Lithgow's achievement and reviews in London, it seems reasonable to call him a front-runner. I thought he gave one of the most natural lived-in performances Ive ever seen.
Like I said… until something else actually opens and presents a formidable challenge, we should view Lithgow as the frontrunner. There are too many hypotheticals.
FWIW, unless something has changed, last I heard was that the Lane/Metcalf/Mantello SALESMAN was happening in the 26-27 season.
And as far as Tonys go, Lane has indeed been stoppable 21 times in his career.

Will Harrison and Alex Winter are already giving better performances than Lithgow
Harrison is definitely putting in WORK. He better have a Tony nomination coming his way or I may punch someone. Lol
Winter…he is good, but GODOT is seldom an exciting piece of theatre for anyone, least of all Tony voters. I mean, they snubbed Stewart and McKellen - two classically trained actors - last time around. I can’t imagine they’re going to be all over Bill & Ted’s Existential Crisis unless it’s a very slow year (which…it won’t be)

How so? Every child and adult I know has read or at least heard of Willie Wonka, Matilda, Fantastic Mister Fox, BFG. Roald Dahl is the mainstream household name author in the US.

Elliott Levey is an AMAZING actor. I saw him in CABARET on the West End as Herr Schultz and he was on par with Steven Skybell as my favorite in terms of how absolutely heartbreaking his portrayal was

I do also think this is Lithgow's Tony to lose. I also hope no one else was planning to win for Featured Actress in A Play this season since Aya Cash is truly extraordinary in the role and will certainly be a frontrunner.

Well, the ticket prices aren't horrible by today's standards, but I will miss the £65 front-row seat I was able to get in London.

You might be able to get in for free here since it’s gonna flop. The subject matter repels people. It’s either offensive to people or woke to others. This will be a Tammy Faye type situation. Remember Katie breyban winning the Olivier??

When I saw this at the Royal Court, it was 20 pounds per ticket. When I went to the pro-shoot performance on the West end...tickets were in the 300 pound range! Lucked out and got a center orchestra seat that happened to be near a camera for 130. Loved it even more the second time, even in a larger space.
I really can’t wait to see this.
