Angelina Jolie will star in Oscar-nominated director Pablo Larraín’s next movie, a biopic about famous opera singer Maria Callas.
Titled “Maria,” the film “tells the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970’s Paris,” according to its logline.
The film is written by Steven Knight (“Spencer,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Eastern Promises&rdquo
and produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula Pictures, Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle Company, and Jonas Dornbach for Komlizen Film.
“Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream,” Larraín said. “To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”
Added Jolie, “I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”

I love how damn weird Spencer and Jackie are, so I’m hoping this is equally as weird and visually stunning.

Even though it’s mentioned, it needs to be reminded that the film uses the older Maria Callas life so it’s not a full out biopic. Like JUDY, SPENCER, JACKIE, etc, it’ll focus on just a period of Callas’ life while giving us glimpses of her younger life. Callas was no longer singing during this period the film focuses on. Her voice had declined about 2 decades prior to her death at age 53 in 1977 of a heart attack. Jolie won’t be singing.

Actually your dates are a bit off. Callas was in superb voice in 1957. Many recordings testify to that. The real trouble came in early 1960s. By 1965 her opera career was over. There was a concert tour in 1973 and 1974 where her voice was sadly hobbled. Wonder if the film will deal with that.

This has the makings to be excellent. She's an excellent choice for it IMO.

Did they ever make Master Class with Meryl Streep? anyway, Jolie is perfect casting.

I didn’t care for Spencer or Jackie. I don’t love the director and his aesthetics or the liberties he takes. Jolie is perfect casting though.

Mike Nichols was attached to direct way back when. Luckily it never went anywhere because who is checking for Streep’s next stage to screen adaptation? She had plenty of those roles that could have easily gone to anyone else, but alas. At least Jolie has an element of surprise to her, because I have no idea what she’s going to do and I cannot wait.

After Mike Nichols passing, no mention has been brought up regarding Meryl as Maria Callas in "Master Class" on HBO.

Mark Harris's excellent Mike Nichols biography sort of implied that as Mike approached death, there were a number of projects (set up by Rudin and others) geared towards keeping Mike occupied at the very end of his life. MASTER CLASS was one of those. I don’t know if Streep or HBO or anyone else actually expected it to go anywhere, but it was something for Mike to work on. It was announced in July 2014, about 4 months before his death.
I loved Pablo Larrain's last two "great lady" historical fiction films, and it will be interesting to see Angelina Jolie try her hand at another dramatic role. Put me down for an opening night ticket!

I haven't seen Spencer because all the synopsizes I've read about it was just too much. Some of those scene descriptions just seemed beyond ridiculous and frankly insulting to Diana. I really liked Jackie though. I like Angelina and Maria is such a fascinating figure so I'm tentatively looking forward to this. It would be great to see Angelina during awards season again.
On a separate note, it would be interesting to see Larrain (or anyone really!) take on a post-Presidency Mary Todd Lincoln. That would be fascinating.
