I was at the second Off-Broadway preview and thought there and then that if it transferred, he'd be a major contender for the Tony. I hope it's his year.

Huge hit, tremendous reviews, a performance many have said is revelatory in the part, and to paraphrase, it's his time."
But we all acknowledge someone shouldn't just win an award based on it being "their time" or that a group of people love a performer and think that performer is owed a Tony or anything, yes? We know this?"
I'm far more surprised by the narrative around Groff being that he's overdue for a Tony and that if he wins, it would a legacy win of some kind. As a way of anointing a "Broadway star"? Sure. But overdue??"
I have liked Groff a lot since I saw him in Spring…. That said, how can someone be overdue if they have been in only 4 Broadway shows, once in the chorus of a show that had a very short engagement. To me that makes 3 shows. You cannot be overdue if you have only been in two prior shows.
I hope he wins because I think he did an amazing job; however, we still have Redmayne in an Olivier winning role, male leads in The Notebook and Water for Elephants, Chip Zein (I assume that show will be long closed, however), and Darcy James (plus anyone else I am forgetting about).

To be fair, that's the same number of shows as Julie Andrews who every time "overdue" comes up is the first name mentioned. Not that I'm comparing their impact on the world of musical theatre, but if we're going strictly off Broadway credits, they're even.
Apologies for speaking for people, but I think the point about "overdue" is less that he should've won already and more that he isn't a newbie, was first in a Best Musical winner 15 years ago, has been nominated before, and now is fully a Bway star.

I have loved Julie Andrews since I saw her in Sound of Music (I did not like Mary Poppins). I have always thought it was stupid when people said she was long overdue for a Tony. They are equating long overdue with three things: (1) she lost for MFL; and (2) she made so many movie musicals, most of which ironically were not based on Broadway shows and (3) she was so famous and beloved, and got her start in the theatre. Those seemed to me to merit a special Tony, which I assume she has, but don't know for sure.
I have enjoyed JG in everything in which I have seen him. The combination of talent, warmth and boy-next-store good looks are hard to resist. He did not originate one of the most iconic roles in musical theatre history; he has not made a bunch of movie musicals that make people think of Broadway, one of his two prior performances was a cameo (in which he was great).
So, even though I do not think JA was ever overdue based on her Broadway catalogue, you just can't compare JG to JA.
Kelly O'Hara was overdue. Chip Zien is overdue for a nomination. Jonathan Groff is not overdue for a Tony Award. That said, I find it hard to believe that anyone will beat him based on the heartbreaking performance he gave in Merrily.
i think he has a good chance, in a way, he is a "dark hourse"

As of now Groff, BDJ, and Redmayne seem like locks to get nominated. Zien has a really strong change for the 4th slot. So probably just 1 slot for every other Lead Actor this season.
I suspect Chip will get the only acting nod for Harmony. Even after those reviews, he's a legend playing in his old theater and holds the entire show together.

If they didn't nominate him for Into the Woods, I have a hard time imagining them nominating him for a show that got dreadful reviews and will probably close 5 months before the Tonys.
