does any type recording exist of this? audio or visual?
Patti sings "Sleepy Man" on her Live album. that's actually one of my favorite songs from that CD.
and as squicked out as I am by Kevin's carpet chest, you have to admit they were a really attractive couple...

I would never know that was Kevin Kline. does anyone else think it looks like a dye job on his hair? I realize he's dark haired but that looks bizarrely black.
odd since Jamie Lockhart is described as blond curls to his shoulders, and nicknamed Yellow Hair.
I think I saw the second mounting of this at the Mark Taper in Los Angeles with Barry Bostwick as the lead... is that possible?
Yes it is, because I saw it there, too. Mark Taper with Barry Bostwick. I have the LP somewhere....
Barry Bostwick won his Tony for The Robber Bridegroom.

Okay, this should interest the LuPone fanatics -- or maybe it's old news -- but I remember seeing in a book somewhere a nude shot of LuPone from Robber Bridegroom. There is definitely a scene where Jamie Lockhart steals Rosamund's clothes. In some stagings it's only SAID that she's "nekkid" when she's actually still in a slip, but I'm pretty sure it was originally done (and on Broadway with Rhonda Coullet also) with her actually being totally naked. And in some book on theatre somewhere, many years ago, I think I saw a picture. It wasn't very distinct or close-up, but there it was.
Can anyone corroborate...or tell me for sure that I'm just imagining it?
You're not imagining it. The nude scene was as you described it.
I did the show back in the '80s with the two leads from the national tour---Tom Wopat and Barbara Marineau. We had the nude scene in our production. She covers herself up with leaves, but she's nude.
Oh, and none of the Jamie Lockharts I've ever seen or heard have been blond.

My old boss, Jerry Freedman, directed those productions. I was lucky enough to get to work with Robert Waldman once as well ... what wonderful gentlemen.

Thanks, best12bars. But the photo...I wish I could remember what book I saw it in. It's possible she was "covered" in it, as you say, but I remember at the time thinking it a bit "scandalous" that there was a nude picture of EVITA!

I read an interview with Patti in Time Out NY and she said that yes, she was nude, but she had very long hair.
Upper right hand corner.
I adore this score...and would LOVE to see a decent production. I never knew about the nude scene! Well, that'll always get you a tony nomination !
I would also love a recording of the original cast w/ LuPone and Kline, as I do like his voice better than Bostwick's. I love LuPone's Sleepy Man with the Mermen, but also dig Coullet's version on the cast recording. Her phrasing is great, and we also get "Nothin' Up".
I may need to get out my jug and mouth organ!
I cannot tell you how much it thrills me to see this thread! I am directing THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM this summer (we start rehearsals in a week and a half). It has long been a favourite show of mine and I am always surprised that so many are unfamiliar with it. Love, love, love the music! I am doing it with a cast of just ten and completely acoustic, which I kinda had to fight for, seems that people don't know what it is like to hear live performers and musicians on stage anymore and are afraid of it. I'm embracing the darkness of Eudora Welty's novella and infusing that into the show a bit more and yes, our Rosamund will indeed be completely nude. Anyway, while I adore Patti's "Sleepy Man" the definitive version is Emily Skinner!
HSN THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM
I just finished performing in this show, and I must say, not my cup of tea. The audience laughed a lot, and I thought the show was funny, especially my character and Salome, but the music was just not my thing. Some songs I do like...Marriage, Goodbye Salome, and anything Rosemond sings (I used to hate Nothin Up on the CD, but our orchestra infused this R & B type beat underneath and made it awesome!) I have to say, Goodbye Salome will be the only one that gets in my mp3 player.
I'm sorry to hear that. I think "Deeper In The Woods" is glorious and very Sondheim-esque. R&B beat under "Nothin' Up" definitely sounds "interesting."
I think I've seen a picture of LuPone onstage naked with Lady Godiva hair covering her breasts and yahoo.
As for a recording... I know that a cast recording was made with Bostwick but without LuPone.
As for one of "those" recordings. I know that it is floating around out there because a friend of mine made me a copy in the early 90's. It was with Kline and Lupone. Long since lost in one of my moves... but it exist.
Wow...I LOVE "Nuthin' Up" and would def. do it if I ever got around to doing my cabaret!
...and there's room for all the "Sleepy's" but Emily does kick it! When I opened the program for the Town Hall concert I gave a little squeal when I saw it listed!
Ya know doodlenyc I did it in a cabaret in college followed by Dolly Parton's "Tennessee Homesick Blues" with some banter in between about being from The South.

I always heard it was a nude body stocking with the long hair strategically glued to the appropriate places.
ooh...I dont want to steal material from ya, Wonder!
Oh well, it's not like Meadowlark! Why does everyone want to sing that sucker in a cabaret?
I LOVE this show! Saw a colege production in the 80's that was amazing. Later on, some friends were in a production (I auditioned, but was cast in another show and became unavailable) who said that the Rosamund refused to do the nude scene unless the Jamie was nude somewhere in the show too, so after "Love Stolen," she jumped up and pulled off his clothes - full frontal! Quite a gasp from the bluehairs in the audience.
Also, I'm pretty sure Original Cast Records offered a 4-song EP of the show with just Patti and Kevin ... similar to their EP of THE BAKER'S WIFE with Patti and Paul Sorvino.

the only music i've heard from this show is on amazon.com, where you can play clips. i'm not sure if this is patti's version though, does anyone know?
also, what is the character of Salome like? is it usually played like an older cratchety woman?
