And with Idina as Amber, it's going to be even more amazing!

Ugh...what are the odds she doesn't throw a random high note onto the end of Miss Baltimore Crabs?

Well, the song already references singing opera, so...

Pretty spot on casting. I would've been shocked if it wasn't Cheno or Krakowski.

Let us not forget 'Velma's Revenge'- which will allow her to belt it out and where that high note would fit perfectly!

"Miss Baltimore Crabs" is the one clunker in an otherwise amazing score. "I screwed the judges"? To whom is she confessing this? At different points she appears to be speaking to (a) herself, (b) Amber and/or (c) the girls who are auditioning; but it all runs together..
It can only be helped by a few random high notes.
Historians of the film will recall that even the creators thought the song was weak and wrote several replacements, but couldn't get it quite right. Ultimately it was Michelle Pfeiffer who said, "Why don't I just sing the song from the stage show?"

I personally find 'Velma's Revenge' to be a much better song than 'Miss Baltimore Crabs'.

Cannot stand her, I knew they would mess this up.

What an exciting and stage-seasoned company this is turning out to be!

The movie at least clarifies the song a bit more.

It's funny how many people don't get the meaning behind her being Miss Baltimore 'Crabs'. LOL.

How predictible. How tired. So over her.

I for one actually thought the one song the film improved upon was Miss Balitimore Crabs.
In the original version is comes off as pungent annoying rant of a song, while the film version they made it more of a production number that actually worked.

Maybe they'll write a new song for Cheno and try to finally get it right (in their eyes).

Okay, I'm slightly confused. I have never seen the show, I have never seen the movie, and I don't know any of the recordings. (Am I supposed to hide in a corner in shame?)
Would someone be so kind and walk me through what happened with Velma's song in the different stages? I got lost between the 2 different song "Miss Baltimore Crabs" and "Velma's revenge" and different versions of "Miss Baltimore Crabs"?
Edit: just looked at song lists. So Velma's Revenge is just an additional song. Sorry, I read it as being an alternative version. It's on neither the OBC nor the movie, was it still in the movie though?

Velma's Revenge was in the stage show. It wasn't recorded for the cast album. It was not included in the movie version.

Re: Iris_Tinkerbell: Velma Von Tussle has had several songs written for her.
Miss Baltimore Crabs (stage version) - Her establishing song as the council interviews Tracy.
Velma's Revenge (stage version) - An angry reprise of the prior song when Tracy is cast on the show without her consent.
Miss Baltimore Crabs (film version) - The song was expanded with a fantasy-dance-break. Instead of interviewing Tracy the council is teaching all the applicants a dance combo for the audition. Velma criticicizes the dancers and flashes back to her talent show days.
Mrs. Von Tussle says (cut song) - An alternate song for the Council interview scene. A demo is featured as a bonus track of the film soundtrack.
Hold Your Applause Till The End (cut song) - Shaiman drafted a song for an unused scene where Velma lays "Wily Coyote style traps" for Tracy around Baltimore. The demo is sung by the divine Christine Ebersole.

The re-staging of it in the film was excellent. They used the song to both advance the plot and show flashbacks of Velma's backstory. They took a "stop and sing" number and made it a catalyst for the story. It was a big improvement.
