Hey guys, just wanted to pop into this thread to say happy halloween!
I want to write music. I want to sit down right now at my piano and write a song that people will listen to and remember and do the same thing every morning...for the rest of my life. - Jonathan Larson. Tick, Tick...BOOM!
"I doubt that's all worked out yet, but I couldn't really think of the movie as RENT if it didn't include the plaid pants, the blue pants, Angel's santa getup and Mark's scarf. "
Yeah, I'm sure it hasn't really been worked out yuet, it's all speculative.-->Exactly what I was thinking, but then I was thinking that Mark wouldn't wear his same sweater, etc, for the entire movie either, obviously enough (or most likely...).
The coat and scarf, for Mark's case would make sense as a leave-in
"the "Mimi Pants" and the "Santa outfit" is a MUST!!!!"
I could live with (and be even happier with) new costumes. Whoever is assigned to design the costumes really has stumbled upon a goldmine of a project...
I'll be very sad if Mark's red and blue sweater doesn't get its time on-screen, and if anyone up there loves me at all, Mimi's blue pants will make their appearance.
Wow... In thinking of Maureen's cat outfit and Roger's leather jacket, I got a quick mental image of Roger in a leather catsuit.
Maybe I should go work on my costume...
Blessed be!
"'But do you really mean, sir,' said Peter, 'that there could be other worlds --all over the place, just round the corner-- like that?'
'Nothing is more probable,' said the Professor..."
What's up with the aversion to a film being a work of art in its own right? If you all were Ed Gorey fans, would you be infuriated if a film adaptation if his work weren't filmed in sepia?

I agree with this, I was just thinking how it'd be interesting to see unfamiliar costumes on familiar characters... ...which is why I more expect sort of cameros by familiar outfits and then new costumes for each character (although something like the santa outfit and catsuit kinda fit the scenes specifically and I'd expect costumes like that to appear as such.)
I would exepct to see all the characters in familiar clothing at one point to the movie, or at least a variation thereof, but def the new costumes thing--it's got potential and it's right to say the one in charge of costume design hit a goldmine, what an opportunity...
I can deal with new costumes if they are similar to the stage version. Like, keep Mimi in blue pants, but have fun with what else she wears with them. *shrugs* I havent put much thought into it.

I bet you all can deal with new whatever as long as your favorite songs are there. The small legion of Broadway fans can only influence a film to a certain extent -- assuming that this director is independent-minded enough to realize that if some people on this board had their way, there would be no compromising even on sets or skin color.
And it is a great oppurtunity for any costume designer to get a chance to work on this film.

Of course - and anything that I've posted up here is not at all with the intention to influence anyone. In all honestly, how much influence do we *really* think a message board is going to have on the outcome of a major film? All I'm (and I think many of us are) doing here is saying what I hope to see. Not for any director to see, but to have a conversation with other people who are clearly passionate about the same topic. That said, yes, the music is the core, but I would like to see some of the costumes carry over. If you think about it, RENT has become somewhat of a period piece, so the costumes probably will be similar.
Also, most costumes can be changed without notice. There are a few trademark pieces though. i.e. mimi's blue pants, Angels's santa dress, mark's scarf (yet really any scarf will do), roger's pants, and maureens cat suit.
In movies there are always tons of costume changes. That being so, it will be easy to slip those, atleast some, of those "trademark" costumes in there. Atleast it would be nice to see.

I'm sure all of the original trademark costumes will be in there, just probably not for the whole show. For example, Mark won't wear his scarf for the whole show, just parts when its appropriate. The movie has to make sense, and the blue pants don't make too much sense to just wear out on the town lol
timote, why are you sure all of the trademark costumes will be in there?
If "Out Tonight" is performed as a striptease, I wouldn't be surprised if Mimi didn't wear the blue pants! Those things must be hard to peel off! Unless they're "disposable."
My 14-year-old sister actually owns "the blue pants" and wears them out on the town. Of course, she has never seen Rent.
But I do remember that in the '80s, my older sister (now 37) wore a similar pair of pants with one leg black leather and the other sparkly red. She must have been about 19 or in her very early 20s.
It should be exciting to find out who gets to design the costumes. Cinematographer will be even more exciting as that can't be anyone involved in the stage production.

*sigh* Why is there a need to take everything so literally? Of course he has no way to be sure - he meant that he thinks they'll most likely be there, because they would make sense. Finding it hard to believe that you didnt' understand that.
Edit: isn't Out Tonight set in Mimi's apartment up until the very end of the song, anyway?
'He really wasn't good as Fieyro. Is it just me or does he sort of come across as a pimp? Just...the hand motions I've seen him do and the attitude..not that Taye is a pimp.' - SallyBrown on Taye Diggs as Fiyero

I'm surprised that you remain convinced that the screenplay follows the stage production so closely that certain costumes would necessarily make sense, and more interestingly, that "Out Tonight" must be set in Mimi's apartment. In the Chbosky screenplay with which Columbus has been working, Out Tonight is actually a song performed in the Cat Scratch Club but ultimately directed toward Roger, who has unwittingly been lured into the club just in time to see Mimi perform. She directs the song toward him. Annoyed, he storms out to sulk in his apartment about being tricked by Angel and Collins into seeing Mimi at the club. Mimi then appears at his door clearly upset that he stormed out, and "Another Day" begins. This shows you just how possible it is to change costumes and settings while still maintaining the inherent logic behind the songs.
Yes, Emcee, how could you possibly forget that EvelynNesbit had seen the sides??? Please! You know NOTHING and he knows EVERYTHING! So PLEASE!
