LOL, you know, everytime I listen to "Light My Candle" it sounds like scored dialogue anyway (except for the "Would you light my candle?" part). And I've seen it performed on stage as such -- perhaps inadvertently, but it worked unlike when a certain Roger (CONSTANTINE) spoke his Another Day lines as dialogue.
At this point, I'm really curious as to what occurs after Mimi sings "Excuse me did I do something wrong!" in the La Vie Boheme coda if "I Should Tell You" doesn't follow!

No one's feeling the love for I Should Tell You? LOL.
My replay favorites have been One Song Glory, Another Day, Out Tonight, Seasons of Love, Take Me or Leave Me, and What You Own so I'm pretty satisfied.
Maybe they're including it with La Vie Boheme? I would be disappointed if they left that out as well.
"During this performance, please feel free to let your cell phones and pagers ring willy-nilly. However, do remember that there are heavily-armed knights on stage and you might well be dragged up and impaled."
(Pre-curtain announcement at the new Broadway musical Monty Python's Spamalot)
The thing about I Should Tell You is that it seems no less awkward for film to me than Another Day. IMO, it's more of a song/performance in its own right than most of the others. But I think I would be content to at least her the tune accompany it if it's been turned into dialogue. In any case, these songs might still end up on the CD (a la "Class" for Chicago).

Well, I suppose that they could include it on the soundtrack. But I think that I Should Tell You has the potential to sound great on film.

Wait, I Should Tell You is being CUT?! I didn't see that... why? It's not no more awkward than any other love duet in a musical, it's not a scene and it's very important to Mimi and Roger's relationship.
This is my first post, and yes, I have read this whole thread. I am a bit pathetic and this is what I do on the weekends. Anyway, I think it's wonderful of Anthony to post here. I am thrilled to hear about those songs being kept in...although I'm wondering about Christmas Bells? Any idea what they're doing there?
Last I read, Christmas Bells was being turned into bits of dialogue. Of course, parts of Christmas Bells ("...somewhere else, not here") are heard throughout the stage production, and the sides indicate that those parts would still be heard as music.
And in anticipation of Whiteboy's return, I should say (for him? I dunno) that there's still a few months until filming so some of the songs that appear to have been cut might find their way into the final version, while some of the songs that have purportedly been maintained might not be there.
I mean, how badly did Condon and Marshall want to keep "Class" and "When Velma Takes the Stand"...

That is true, I am still holding criticism back until I hear a lot more about the movie. That was one song I was kind of hoping to see included, though.
I'm really happy that this thread is no longer about politics (major pressure off me for potentially ruining the thread).
Anyway, I guess this pertains especially to Anthony 'cause he's the one who asked why I didn't want to discuss politics and then said he'd like to discuss them with me; I have no problem with if anyone still wants to discuss the topic, so I made a new topic in the Off Topic Board, called "Political Discussion from RENT FILM CASTING NEWS THREAD moved here"
*No more politics need be discussed at a board where it is not relevant.*
Anthony, I hope both of your shows went well today; again, hope you had a blast at both (that is what's most important after all)! Also, thanks for the tidbits on the songs to be included in the film (from what you remember); thanks for keeping us informed!
I'm still very hopeful/happy/excited/fillinyourownadj. upon the prospect of this film:), the news keeps affirming it and makes me more anxious, in a good way.
I'm sure whatever songs end up in the film as dialogue or as song will be justified in their placement as such and of course there may be a few that someone wanted to do differently (as with wanting to leave the song "Class" in Chicago) but had to bend to accomodate someone else. All is subject to change depending on all circumstances anyway, we'll just have to wait and see.

SUre I can clarify the libretto connection. In the libretto if the screenwriter reads he can write his filmic scenes that are not seen in the play they were supposed to be in the viewer's imagination, where they were etc (not for all the scenes but for quite a few). I picture an increbidle Christmas Bells shot on the actual St. Mark's Place in the East Village. I also picture an excellent Happy New Year Scene that just doesn't have a padlocked door to indicate where they are in the play. It's all up the filmic genius of Chris Colombus if he follows the libretto because it is very specific and of course alters it where appropriate to make it as filmic as possible. Look Milos Foreman did it for Hair, and they did it for Chicago, I see no reason why Rent just because its being produced by Revolution and not one of the major companies that they can't start a cult all over again like the OBC was, and a cult it was i knew people who saw the show 100 plus times, every time it was the last performance for any of the OBC the street was filled with hundreds of fans without tickets hoping they can get scalped ones, the cops would have to close off the block to traffic, it was a real phenomena for Broadway. I have a very good feeling about the film esp if 5 OBC's are in it. They'd have serious national noterity and this is the time for musical to movie is in, the timing is perfect, lets hope the film is, feel free to ask any other questions if i didn't clarify anything. cheers
I feel thats impossible its an integral part of the plot of the movie, we can't just look at our favorite songs but the parts that move the narrative forward, Act I builds up to Maureen's entrance and wether or not Roger and Mark would take Benny's deal to stop Maureen's performance. Her performance is hysterical and people will laugh in the theatre. Those who will go to see this film know what performance art is and Over The Moon mocks it beautifully, I can see a packed house laughing hysterically at this.

I just wanted to add that I do very much prefer the way Over the Moon was done back in the earlier days. I loved that Maureen was taking it *very* seriously - and *that* is part of what made it so funny. Now they seem to beat you over the head with the comedy aspect of it - as if the audience wouldn't connect with the piece if it wasn't so over the top with gestures, etc. I guess that is one way to go with performance art and it doesn't make it wrong - but I just preferred it the way it was initially done instead of what it's evolved into. It will be interesting to see how all of the elements of the show are played out in the film though.
The first time I saw the Rent commercial air with Norbert, Marcy, Jim, etc years ago, I got chills. It was so sureal to see the characters in a natural setting - I literally teared up....made them seem so real. From that moment, I couldn't wait until someone turned this story into a movie. And with the cast that has been mentioned so far? Couldn't ask for more at this point.....

That Rent commercial is how I always envisioned that the movie would feel. It just... it felt really dark, and intense and natural. I hope the movie has that same feeling to it.
I agree, I hope it has a similar vibe. But that's where my concern about Columbus comes in, Harry Potter was so whimsical and cute... I was very disapointed. I know he is approaching Rent differently, but even the best intentions don't always have the best results.

I have to agree, I enjoyed the 3rd movie much better then the first 2. I will give him the benefit of the doubt simply because the 3rd book IS a lot darker compared to the first 2, or at least I think so. *points to self* Right, biiig Harry Potter geek here.
Why do I not live in NYC and get to see such commercials???
Okay, I'm done now.
Why do we play with fire?
Why do we run our fingers through the flame?
Why do we leave our hands on the stove, although we know we're in for some pain?
-tick...tick...BOOM!
