That decision's already been made, at the second of four Eligibility meetings. Mays and Pinkham are both above the title, and no alteration of their eligibility was made, so they both are in Best Actor.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Why would you want Pinkham and Mays facing off? They should try and get one in as featured, no?

The Tony committee has already discussed Gentleman's Guide at one of its meetings, and if any petitioning was done to move one of them to Featured, it didn't work. I don't really want them to go against each other, but I would like to see Pinkham recognized for his performance (and obviously I cannot have both of those things).

Mamaleh, you lost me.

Whether or not his performance deserves to win, how do you formulate a list "based solely on merit and not on past awards show hostings" if you haven't seen all of the eligible performances? Are you suggesting (since your list was in order of preference) that NPH is incapable of giving a performance that could be better that Zachary Levi in "First Date"?

I too have no clue if his performance will prove worthy of a nomination (I certainly hope so; I'm an unabashed fan of the show). And I even share your expectation that he will likely get nominated either way. But to state definitively who "deserves" a nomination -- *on merit* -- doesn't really work without seeing all of the performances in question.

Yeah, you're kind of screwed either way then... if they both get in, it could split the votes of Gentleman's lovers so that neither get as many votes as they might separately.

But at least NPH should be happy to know that he's already got this Tony in the bag, unless you go by merit, for his as-yet-unseen Hedwig interpretation, which seems to redefine the word merit by excluding him before his first preview...

I think these are sure things:
Steven Pasquale - The Bridges of Madison County
Norbert Leo Butz - Big Fish (yes, even though it closed)
Andy Karl - Rocky
NPH - Hedwig

I'll be pretty dumbfounded if Pasquale doesn't win... I really don't know what more one would need to do to win a Tony...

"I really don't know what more one would need to do to win a Tony..."

Get more votes than the other nominees.

I am seeing Bridges on April 6--I hope it will last at least that long--and I love his voice on the recorded tracks. But he's in a show that's foundering, and he's not the main event in it--Kelli O'Hara is. I'd have no problem with him winning, but I doubt it will happen. If he gets good reviews, I think Harris will win.

Being nominated is a huge honor and wonderful recognition of an actors work. It has happened before, (Wicked) and I am sure Kristin was please to be nominated, even though, she didn't win that night. I do not think of it as a competition. It is really, recognition of fine work. By the way, I love Norbert, however, he didn't have much to work with, on Big Fish, and I do not agree, that it is a Tony performance. I love him as an actor, but, that is not the role that I believe is worthy of a Tony Nomination.

I love, Wicked, and Kristin, Cenoweth, too. Norbert Leo, Butz is also, great. He, better get, nominated. Awards, though, are, not, about, winning. They are just, about recognition.

I am rooting for Pasquale. More than any show so far (of course Hedwig can change everything), his performance stuck with me and moved me just beyond words. Mays is impressive and hilarious and just all around superb, but I would vote for Pasquale over even him.

Clearly, oasisjeff - "Get more votes than the other nominees" is the answer - but I mean work-wise, to merit one, I'm not sure what more one would have to do... I understand merit and being nominated and/or winning a Tony may be unrelated
