I would have thought Ramin would have been a for sure for a nomination before “Les Mis” started previews on Broadway (based off of the hype of his performance from the tour), but it seems many (on here, at least) were underwhelmed by him. I am thinking he might be off the list.
I have a feeling Pasquale will score a nomination, however.
Sincerely hoping Norbert will be nominated. That performance was a tour-de-force and one I will never forget having seen. He deserves a Tony for it.
I suppose my guesses are:
Neil Patrick Harris Andy Karl Norbert Leo Butz Jefferson Mays Steven Pasquale
I also have an odd feeling “Bullets Over Broadway” is going to be one of those shows that earns nominations in every category and could see Zach Braff getting a nom.
I would be a little surprised to see the two Gentleman's Guide actors competing against each other, but Bryce Pinkham IS starring in a show that got much better reviews than either Big Fish and Rocky. I wouldn't count him out at this point.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

Have you seen the reviews? The critics were so impressed by his performance!

The critics, yes, but, as we know, critical reviews often do not reflect the Tony nominators’ opinions. Reading the “Les Mis” preview thread, there were many who were saying they were underwhelmed by him. Before beginning previews, I feel like there was so much hype for his performance, but once performances started, I sensed a diminishing excitement surrounding it. Wouldn’t be surprised if he still got a nomination though, even just by virtue of the monster of a role he is in.
I don't really get the distinction between lead and supporting actors/actresses. It seems like it should be obvious (and sometimes it is) but more often than you would think... it's not. A lot of the time the category is simply subjective.
In Aladdin...the genie James Iglehart takes the 2nd to the last bow..after Courtney Reed "Jasmine" and she would certainly be up for lead if nominated (not going to happen...just as an example). But he winds up supporting. Don't get it.
Does it change based on the show? I mean if there is an obvious lead actor, then the next one is supporting? Are there actual rules about this? Or is it really the whim of the producers?
The Tony Nominators don't make decisions from previews, they make them from the opening night performance.
He’s been playing Valjean since being on the tour. I assume his performance throughout previews is fairly reflective of the performance Tony nominators will see. Please know that I am simply speculating based off of my impression of the hype surrounding his performance – I have no stake in whether or not he gets nominated and could very easily be wrong. Just guessing here.
Regarding the leading/featuring roles - I think it often comes down more to who the central characters are, as opposed to stage time, necessarily.
You mean, they often (if not always) do?
I mean that shows that critics love do not always get love from the Tony nominators and vice versa.

Can't see him the getting a nomination in the category with the others mentioned here.

Actually, it is common to see a nomination that no one expected. I wouldn't count anyone out quite yet unless their performance was dreadful. And that is not the case here.

I have a sad, sinking feeling that Harris is pre-anointed to win as long as he's not terrible, which would be a travesty. I know, HEDWIG hasn't yet begun, but here's my wish list for nominees, based soley on merit and not on past awards show hostings: Steven Pasaquale, Jefferson Mays, Norbert Leo Butz, Bryce Pinkham and Zachary Levi -- in order of preference. Like that list will ever happen.
I think Norbert is out-of-sight, out-of-mind, as his show was generally poorly-received and even though his performance was praised it wasn't to the extent Levi was praised as the brighest spot of the otherwise slight FIRST DATE. Combined that it's his debut, and I could see Levi snagging the Rob McClure memorial you-closed-but-we-loved-your-performance nomination honor.
But for that to happen I'd have to expect a few remaining performances yet to open to get panned to make room.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
